Cutesy Error Messages: Love 'Em or Leave 'Em?

Though I have a soft spot in my heart for Twitter's famed Fail Whale (come on, it's kind of cute), cheeky and witty fail messages can sometimes leave a pain in my side. This is especially true if I'm logging in to a site for something important.
Mostly, it's Firefox's "Well, this is embarrassing . . ." that gets me worked up (hello, I live on the Internet!), but the most recent fail message that made me chuckle was Flickr's pop-up that started with an "Oh dear."

It's unfortunate that the site isn't working properly, but do you think these messages add insult to injury, or do you feel it makes it easier to accept that the site or feature is down if it takes a more humanized approach?
