Facebook Pulls Burger King App For Telling People They Had Been Defriended

Have You Ever Had to Defriend Someone Online?

Did you get defriended by someone hoping for a free cheeseburger? The New York Times reports that the reason Facebook pulled a Burger King app promising a free burger if you defriended ten friends was that it sent a notification that you were no longer someone's friend (usually, there's no annoying status update, unlike the glaringly public breakup announcement). How rude!

In my cavalier MySpace days, when it seemed like adding as many people as you could was the right way to go, I eventually had to defriend people, mainly based on the fact that we weren't really friends in the first place. Now that I only add people to my Facebook account that I actually know and am friends with in real life, I haven't had to defriend anyone. Nor has a burger encouraged me to do so.

But what if you have a falling out with someone? Or you don't want someone having access to your info? Tell me: Have you ever had to defriend anyone?

Wait so with this Burger King thing you had to defriend people to get a free burger? What is the point of that? I have defriended many people over the years. It always seems OK to add them at first but then they turn out to be a psycho, stalker, or just plain annoying [post a bulletin every 5 minutes to let people know they are going to eat lunch, go to sleep, go to the bathroom, shower, etc] and in those cases they got the axe! I'm about to defriend my ex because he is a nut bag. I am married for 2 years and haven't been with him for almost 5 and he still wont leave me alone!!!

I have most definitely defriended people on social networks...but they have to do something pretty crappy to me or my husband or my family in order for me to do it.

I haven't defriended, but probably should, when it comes down to it.

I've defriended people I barely know but accepted at a time when I accepted all requests.

Of course I have! People change, and a lot of friends we have just aren't meant to stay in our lives forever. Mostly, on Facebook, I've defriended guys I knew that a) said some very scary things (one was so angry at Obama being nominated for the election that he consistently updated his status with "I hope Obama gets assassinated so people can make the right decision" and "I'd kill him myself if I didn't have to go to jail..shame." and b) was very whiny, racist, and judgemental. I didn't know him intimately, and I don't want to be associated with people like that, so YEAH. He's gone! The other major one was my old roommate's brother. He's just..nosy. I say DEFRIEND AWAY! There's no obligation to keep a person on your F-list on the internet!

I recently defriended my ex. We had the trying to be pals thing going on but after seeing the update announcing his engagement I realized there was no need to be so involved in each others lives.

"spork out my eyes" hahaha I love that. I might have to use that! ;-) I only ever defriended one person. She was a friend of a friend who I had a lot in common with (new baby, anxiety, and so on). When I would comment or put something on her wall she never responded so away she went.

I've defriended and blocked access to some people. It just happens sometimes.

Yes, in fact I did it about 20 minutes ago. I don't need friends on my facebook that make me want to spork out my eyes.

So did that burger king things not work?!?!?!?! Because I totally did it! Anything for free food! Oh well, I de-friended people I wasn't really friends with anyway. I don't add anyone I don't know/haven't met in person. I did de-friend a lot of people during the election/inaguration because they kept posting stupid status/notes and starting fights with people so I was pretty over that.I find that after you delete someone, if you don't block them they'll try and add you again.

I've defriended people i've fallen out with, guys i've stopped dating, and people that i just plain can't remember why i accepted the friend request in the first place. But i have to say, initial screening of requests has made this less and less frequent.

I only did once to finalize the restraining order against him. No, seriously.

I limit access, defriend, and block people (ex's) who either aren't active in their accounts or who I decided didn't need to have that much access to me (what's the point of being someone's "friend" if I am limiting their access to my profile down to only my favorite books. I really do not think that Facebook sends you a message saying that someone defriended you though...

Every now and so often I do defriend "friends". Just because I know you, because you are the BFF from my coworkers girlfriend doesn't mean that I want you to know what I'm doing. Yes sure I could put you on my limited profile but yet I still see your not so interesting (at least for me) status updates. Yesterday I deleted someone who took my job after I quit. He was friends with all my other old coworkers but yet we never had a real conversation. I didn't know anything about him. But yet I accepted the friend request anyway. If none of the both parties (you and "your friend") makes an effort to post on walls, comment on status updates or even senseless poking (let alone offline contact) then I do not see a benefit in having that person on my list. Some people leave ppl just on there so they have a ridiculous amount of friends (see myspace) in the hope to impress their real friends.

Recently I defriended someone and blocked his access to my Twitter feed. He was an ex who I'd been trying to be friends with, but a full year after our break-up we still couldn't be friends(and it was stupid of me to try). I think he probably still reads my blog, and that creeps me out, but there's only so much we can do to block people from our public lives.
