Say Goodbye to the Foursquare You Knew and Loved

Brace yourselves, check-in addicts — the popular location-based social app Foursquare recently announced some big changes. While the company is not totally doing away with check-ins, you will no longer be able to check in from Foursquare itself.

Instead, check-ins are being moved to their new app Swarm (pictured above), which you have to download separately. If you're worried about losing your previous photos, friends, or check-ins, don't fret. They are already saved in the new app.

So what will the new Foursquare actually do? The company's new focus will be built around searching for restaurants, cafes, and other locations nearby. The company hopes to move toward giving users what it calls "personalized local search" and says that users will be able to follow experts and find nearby locations based on their preferences.

There's some good news about the breakup, though. If you use both Swarm and Foursquare, they work together. For instance, in the photo below, the left side is a venue page for someone who only uses Foursquare. On the right, you see a check-in button when Swarm is also installed.

Because of the big shake-up, the company has also debuted a new logo. The original checkmark has been replaced with a new colorful design that is "a mix of map pin and superhero emblem."

So, what do you think . . . will you continue to use Foursquare in its new format?
