Earlier this year, at SXSW 2014, we got our hands on the Game of Thrones exhibition's Ascend the Wall experience, which was pure insanity. A cramped, enclosed crate elevator sets the stage for the Oculus Rift virtual reality gaming headset to transport you up the vast fortification that is The Wall.
As you pull the Oculus goggles over your head, the incredible 3D imagery feels all too familiar. Walk along the crunching snow path of the Night's Watch, and look down 300 miles of sheer cliff. The experience works in tandem with noise-cancelling headphones, booming audio that shakes the floor beneath, and a fan that simulates the howling wind at the top of The Wall. It's completely disorienting — your stomach drops as you peer over the edge and your heart races as the crate rumbles.
In this episode of The Sync Up, get a sneak peek at the "Ascend the Wall" Oculus Rift experience and try it for yourself when the Game of Thrones exhibition visits a city near you.
