Geek Tip: Record Expenses on Your Cell With Dime Tracker

Looking for a high tech solution that will keep your check book balanced and your piggy bank full? The next time you are dining out or shopping text message your expenses to a free service called Dime Tracker. The company tracks your spending habits by recording your purchases directly on your cell. You can then use that data to create a nifty budget that you can store on your phone for easy access. To sign up you give Dime Tracker your wireless carrier and cell phone number and they will send you a text containing your confirmation code. To activate your account you enter your confirmation code on the company's website. Do you know a great shortcut or tip you think geeksugar readers should know? Share it in our 'How To' Help - Guide To All Things Geeky group,

I know that this long list looks scary, but trust me, once you get the hang of it, it'll be a snap the second time around.

  1. First of all, join the 'How To' Help - Guide To All Things Geeky
  2. Click "Create and Share!" on the left hand side
  3. Choose "Blog"
  4. Give your photo a Title
  5. Leave the category as "general"
  6. Change the channel to "technology and gadgets"
  7. Add keyword(s) (for example mine for this photo was "Geek tip")
  8. Click on the "Add Image" link below the "body" box
  9. A popup window will happen - click on "Browse" to find your image on your computer
  10. Once you have the image chosen, click "Submit"
  11. The popup will show you your image, choose size: "normal" - if you want, you can give it a title (which will show up as a caption)
  12. Click "Insert" and the popup will go away
  13. Your "body" box will now have some text in it. Leave it as is. If you want to add some text before the picture telling me why you think this person is geeky, do it before the code that has appeared.
  14. Click Submit

So join the 'How To' Help - Guide To All Things Geeky and start sharing your favorite tips! Your tricks just might end up on the geeksugar homepage!

Sweet!! I was just trying to think of an easy way to watch where I'm spending my money.. Unfortunately, the "Transactions" page won't update. I've already sent a gazillion text messages to the email address..so hopefully, it'll work. If not, then oh well.. I'll have to do it the old fashion way. :P

That's a great idea. I typically track my spending with Quicken, but I could use a good on-the-go tool.

I still use my PDA to track spending.

I'm trying to get this to work with my blackberry, too... it doesn't seem to be getting it though.

That's cool.. I'd hate to lose my phone though. :)

I wonder how you can get that to work with a Blackberry. It usually refuses to send a "email" address a SMS message. Hrms. Must look into it some more. I signed up, though! As soon as I can figure out a way, I will defnitely send it!!!

I agree with Nelore. While I do pay for bulk text messages, I spend a bit too, I'd say I'd be sending at least 3 texts a day to this thing...and that's about half of the "free" messages I get....I'll keep it bookmarked though, maybe if I get a better texting plan I can do it.

Yes, free. Free except for the fact that cell phones are usually charged for incoming text messages. :/ That's why I don't do text message alerts and such with my cell phone.

Thats rad. Before I killed it, I alway used to balance my check book on my palm or pocket pc. It was so handy to have it calculated for you, and to also always have it on you do you could balance it as soon as you spent.
