Finally Solve a Rubik's Cube With a Little Help From Google

May 19 2014 - 9:03am

Google Doodles [1] are our favorite thing about the search engine's home page, and when it's an interactive Doodle [2] — boom! — mind blown. Today's Doodle commemorates the classic logic puzzle the Rubik's Cube with a movable, playable game right on the Google home page. This year also marks the 40th anniversary since Professor Erno Rubik created the cube [3] as a tool for students to understand space and 3D.

Built with CSS ingenuity, the Rubik's Cube appears today — May 19 — as an ode, according to Wired [4], to the 519 quintillion possible configurations of the cube.

The Doodle Rubik's Cube is part of a larger Chrome Labs experiment [5] with a dozen interactive cubes to play with, as well as the source code the Google team used in this project, for you to create your own [6] mathematical teaching tool.

If you get stuck on the Google Doodle, one Rubik's Cube enthusiast shared their cube-busting skills in the below YouTube tutorial.
