Happy 6th Anniversary Apple iPod!

Can you believe it? Six years ago today, Apple introduced the first generation (5G) iPod. With a hard disk drive, mechanical scroll wheel and a FireWire port, the device was unlike any other mp3 player on the market at that time. Over the years we've watched the revolutionary iPod evolve into many shapes and forms. From the iPod classic and the shuffle to the Nano and now the iPod touch, it's no wonder why the iPod was voted the greatest gadget of all time! In honor of the iPod's anniversary, it'd be great if you could leave a comment telling us what you love about this wonderful piece of technology.

I had my old old one until less than a year ago (we're talking 4 buttons across the top, here). It finally self destructed. I don't use my new fancy video for anything other then playing music, but I love that it holds my entire music library on it so I don't have to worry about losing music or if I need to delete some to make space on my computer.

I think the thing I love most about the iPod is that Apple doesn't even advertise most of it's best features. Most of the best features & content are user-spread and user created. (Like the fact that you can read ebooks using the Notes feature, or use a piece of software to download directions, gas prices, weather, horoscopes, & RSS feeds to the Notes feature. The iPod is so insanely versatile that just when I think they've thought of everything, some new little program pops out for it and I get addicted all over again.

You're forgetting the Ipod Mini! That was my first ipod back in December 2004 in the color lime. Now I have the 30GB White Video Ipod and I LOVE it! I can't imagine having no itunes or ipod; it would be a sad world.

I remember my first iPod, it was a brand spankin' new 5GB that was the first of its kind. My boss bought it for me as a gift. Actually he bought me several throughout the various generations. That's only one of many reasons I ended up marrying him :-P I think I've had one of each model type up until the release of the first Nano which may be one of my all time favs. Capacity was *ok* but the size and the color screen were so perfect. I know there can be a backlash from the iPod haters but this little player changed the way we tote around music. Before the iPod your choice was very small with tiny capacities or honking big with large capacities. There wasn't an inbetween. I heart you Apple!!!!

I got a green ipod mini for Christmas two years ago...it's now obselete, of course. However, the thing is still kicking, and I will quite seriously attest that it was responsible for my survival through two years of studying for law school final exams. These days it stays pretty permanently docked on my ihome by my bed. This Christmas I'm thinking it's time for a new one...but I'm torn between getting a Classic or a Touch. Anyone have any informed suggestions? I should add that I have a pretty extensive library...

I bought one of 1.5-gen ipods when i was working in japan (a 10gig version). At that time, it cost a lot of money to be that "elite". Came out to be 62,500 yen at the time ($550us). Because when it first came out, it was a mac-only device, so it was a nice, easy way to spot mac-users at the time....when apple people were such minorities. Kinda like asian people in North America in the 70's. Look at us now!!! mwahahahahahaha.

I bought this six years ago when it first came out. And my 1G iPod still works! Even though I recently upgraded to the iPod touch, my first iPod still holds a special place in my heart. When I first bought my iPod, I took a trip to San Francisco to visit my husband (we weren't married yet and he was spending time out there doing some research on his thesis). I had literally never seen anybody else with an iPod. Neither, apparently, had the security people at SFO. I caused a security incident when I tried to go through security with that thing, and they detained me for almost an hour! Good thing iPods caught on! :)

Wow, six years. I love my 5th generation iPod. My first iPod was the 4th generation, but leaped out of my purse and died a tragic death in a parking lot last year. I'm planning on getting a shuffle for the holidays this year. :)
