Have You Ever Bought a Used Computer?

Would You Buy a Used Computer?

My friend is in the market for a new laptop — well, sort of. She's been scouring Craigslist and eBay with hopes that a relatively new, but used, model turns up. This is against the better advice of almost everyone in her life, by the way. Her friends and family worry that she'll end up with a total lemon and not see the problems before it's too late. And because it's "for sale by owner," she'll lose the opportunity for a refund or warranty.

Her argument is pretty simple: buying a used computer can save her close to $500, and she'll take the necessary steps to ensure that she makes a good purchase. Do you think she's making a smart move, or is she looking for trouble?

Yes... I always buy used laptops. Sort of a hobby. I always do fresh installs, so I know my system is free from viruses and other crap installations and I'm good at fixing computers so I never have any problems with hardware or software. I have never had to rely on any kind of tech support to fix a PC or laptop. Desktop computers, I used to build those myself, but I've since moved away from using them at all over the last 5 or 6 years.

I bought one recently for my at-home job... I got the computer itself and two separate monitors from various people on craigslist. They are all still working out great, several months later. Although we did come across one bad experience before we ended up with my computer - we went to the guys house (who apparently refurbishes computers), he turned it on and it was dead. Definitely be sure to test it out first and of course, make sure you're only spending an amount of money that wouldn't prevent you from buying another one should you happen to be unlucky.
