How-To: Craft a Great Online Dating Profile

How-To: Beef Up Your Online Dating Profile

Today, trying to snag a date online is just as popular as speed dating was in the late '90s. The Internet gives you more options because you can cover a wider area of partner possibilities (as in, the entire globe), but none of that is going to help you if you don't give off the right signals. First impressions are everything — even virtual ones. Beef up your online dating profile with these tips, and snag yourself one of those "many fish" your mother is always talking about.

  • Make sure you're fishing in the right pool —You wouldn't go to Craigslist's Casual Encounters to look for a serious relationship, so don't go to Match.com if you're just looking for a little fun on a Friday night. Sites like eHarmony and Chemistry have had a lot of success by getting scientific about the dating process (taking your likes and dislikes and matching you up with someone who's compatible), so make sure you're ready to commit before diving in!
  • Lose the negativity — No one wants to meet up with a Debbie Downer, so if your online dating profile is riddled with sarcasm, negativity, and pessimism, you can be sure that you won't be getting many date requests any time soon. This doesn't mean you have to be fake, just keep the "I'm too cool for school" attitude to a minimum.

  • Say no to mug and lingerie shots — Profile pics that look like mug shots are the worst! Don't take a picture specifically for the purpose of using it as your profile image (you know, like the ones where you can tell the subject held out her arm to take the shot). Pictures taken in the mirror (unless they are incredibly artistic), or pictures taken on a camera phone are also discouraged. Also, think twice before you use that sexy one of yourself on the beach in Hawaii with a barely-there bikini.
  • Show off your best angle — Use my tips on how to look and feel good in front of the camera, then use a free online photo editor to touch up the colors, and crop it to perfection.
  • Act natural! — Your profile photo doesn't have to be a glamour shot, just an image that shows your personality. Sure it's an ego boost to show off how cute you looked in that bridesmaid dress, but you don't look like that every day. Try a pic in your natural element, or a casual photo from your last vacation.
  • Build a library of fun recent photos — We all know how important photos can be (whether we like it or not) on our profiles, so don't be hesitant to add in some great shots of you over the past year. Avoid any poorly-lit shots and pics from your computer's webcam.
  • Be creative! — If you love travel, don't just say "I love to travel," tell people why, and where you've been! Detail is great, but you're also not writing a book here — a paragraph about your favorite things should do the trick.
