Last Night's CNN Hologram Technology: Freaky and Amazing

Last Night's CNN Hologram Technology: Freaky and Amazing

During last night's election coverage, I found myself bouncing around from high-def channel to high-def channel, seeing what ABC, CNN, Fox, and MSNBC had to offer. I already knew that CNN correspondent John King would be showcasing election news from the high-tech Multi-Touch Collaboration Wall, but I had no idea CNN would take their techiness to the next level.

Were you as shocked as I was when they showed correspondent Jessica Yellin in "hollographic 3D form?" Turns out this impressive technology was made possible by Vizrt and SportVu with the help of 44 HD cameras and 20 computers. The A+ geekiness award definitely went to CNN last night!

Did you happen to see it in action? What would you think if they used "virtual" correspondents regularly?

There was an interview with the firm behind the technology in a Norwegian newspaper. They actually downplayed the quality they could manage, in order that people would believe what they were watching.

That's it- I have to get an HDTV... but I'm shocked to be reading this! We're finally living in the future! lol When can we expect to get floating cars and time machines?

I didn't get to see it because my cable was out of whack, but the technology they were using on NBC was pretty cool too. They had the invisible board behind correspondents that moved with what they had on the computer. And before the results came in, Ann Curry was reporting with a similar holograph type thing. It was pretty cool.

Now if they can make the people look like they're standing right in your living room, that would be amazing! ;)

Found this article online: http://www.cbc.ca/technology/story/2008/11/05/tech-holograms.html Here's a pertinent quote: "...the images were tomograms, which are images that are captured from all sides, reconstructed by computers, then displayed on screen. Holograms, on the other hand, are projected into space."

I don't get it - weren't the two images (one of Wolf and one of the Hologram) just combined in a computer? What's so special about that? It's not like there was a real 3-D hologram standing in the studio. It seemed gimmicky and lame to me.

I liked it. Not as high tech as it could have been, I think, but it was pretty freaking sweet. And it made the coverage more interesting. Definitely took the edge off a bit for me.

I saw it! The quality didn't matter to me, it was the fact that they had a hologram. Kind of Japan-ish high-tech :D "The wall" was amazing too. Ooh I'd like to play with it

I agree skigurl, I wasn't that amazed but then my boyfriend is in the CG industry so I knew all that it was and wasn't...meh. I was more excited by current's coverage w/the dj and the map that was moving to the music and news.

I thought it was soooo cool! I couldn't believe that had made it happen. Felt like all those movies we've seen where holograms look like their are there in the room.
