Microsoft to Launch Dual Platform Strategy With Two Versions of Windows Mobile OS in Coming Months

Do You Want to See a Cell Phone From Microsoft?

The Zune Phone rumor that surfaced in late 2008 obviously didn't come out in 2009 (we got the Zune HD instead), but there is still new Microsoft cell phone news this year.

In the coming months, Microsoft will launch a dual mobile platform strategy — meaning they'll release two versions of Windows Mobile.

Windows Mobile 6.5 will launch Oct. 1, and then next February, we'll see a version of it with a touch screen UI. The ultimate goal? To compete with the iPhone's OS and Android.

This news is interesting, sure, but more interesting is that there's still no news about Microsoft making a cell phone. It seems like the right time — Google and Apple are succeeding as handset makers and it's a good time to compete. Do you want Microsoft to make a cell phone?

As long as it's for Verizon.

I have seen what Microsoft has brought to the table: it's called Windows Mobile and it sucks. The real power of a phone isn't neccessarily the hardware, because most of them have pretty similar specs. The thing that makes or breaks any piece of technology is the interface, and I have yet to see a well-designed MS interface of any kind. iPhone ftw.

Exactly. Apple isn't so great.

I completely agree iblastoff. I think everyone can agree that the iPhone is far from perfect so lets see what Microsoft can bring to the table.

yes of course! at least we'll know it to be more open than the currently ridiculously restricted iphone of which i can't even use it properly as a flash drive. the zune hd has already surpassed the ipod. people just don't know it yet.

i would LOVE to see what they would come up with. and i would NEVER want a company as HUGE as microsoft to give up. competition is never a bad thing.
