Netflix Will Eliminate Separate User Profiles For Households

Do You Use Netflix Profiles?

As a further show of commitment and compromise to my boyfriend, I was about to add his own profile to my Netflix account so he could pick his own movies, instead of being subject to my dorky chick flicks and indie masterpieces. Serious, right?

Well, Netflix thwarted my plan by announcing that they're eliminating profiles, so you won't be able to separate the queues — and distinctive movie tastes — of your household. Of course, now that I can't have it, I want it more than ever, and I always felt like it was a cool and convenient service for the website. Netflix claims that not enough people were using it, which could be true (case in point: my own anecdote), but is that true for you? Netflix users, have you used separate user profiles?

It makes no sense for Netflix to remove this feature. Frankly it seems like a ploy to force people to buy their own, separate accounts instead of competing for queue spots. My family uses Netflix and Blockbuster. We have very different tastes! :D I am not sure how this is going to be handled. The other benefit to the queue lists was each person's separate queue could be mailed to them directly (so no guessing when the mail arrived). Now, if people return movies at different rates, they will have to constantly monitor the queue or risk having a movie meant for someone else show up. LOL, I predict a lot of grumbles.

I used my second profile to keep my television discs separate from my movie discs. I like to have two of each out at a time.

I use blockbuster but these profiles sound awesome! I wish blockbuster had something like that and netflix definitely should not nix this.

Does this make you angry? Let Netflix know! Spread the word! http://www.keepnetflixprofiles.org http://www.cafepress.com/keepflixprofile

queenlizzie - Come back and let us know what you think about Amazon Unbox! My S.O. and I have had separate profiles. He hardly ever used his though. In fact, his queue is almost empty anyway. I'm still a little annoyed though. Why take it away??

Netflix profiles seem like such an obvious feature that it's strange they're eliminating them. I can't imagine why, even if only a small percentage of Netflix users actually utilize them.

We upped our subscription so we could each have the same number of movies on both of our lists. I'm REALLY unhappy that this is going away--our queue was a complete disaster and movies seemed to be distributed unfairly when we shared a queue. I guess this is Netflix trying to encourage people to sign up for multiple subscriptions, but we'll probably cancel altogether and just go digital. It's a shame, but Blockbuster won't work for us because their movie selection is absolutely terrible and their customer service is worse. Amazon Unbox, here we come...

Thanks, GeekSugar, for the link to the position. I am headed over there right now to say, Don't do this, Netflix!

I'm using them quite a bit - my wife watches a lot of TV series as "background noise" when she's busy, while I'm watching a fairly wide range of movies. This way, we've both been in control of our own queue. We used to be on the 5-movie plan, but if Netflix is following through with their plan, I'll cease using them for my part - I don't want a second account, and two people managing one account is just annoying.

We've never used the separate profiles, but it's always worked out because I'm really the only one who updates the queue and mails out the viewed DVDs. Luvvy only adds something when he really feels like seeing it.

I have a separate profile for my mom's movies. It is nice that she can have her own queue, ratings, etc. Plus my profile has BluRay set up and hers doesn't, which was convenient. However, the interface for the profiles was terrible. You had to log in every time you wanted to switch between them. There was no way to manage all the queues at once, or move something from one to the other. Plus you couldn't delete profiles. I'm not that sad it will be removed, although I think they could have instead made it a lot better. I moved all the movies into the main queue yesterday and it was a real pain. :irk:

I have quite a few profiles. When we were sharing one we would end up getting movies my husband would want to see and he would never watch them. It got so frustrating I made myself a profile and then we had a profile for our former roommate so we wouldnt have two netflix subscriptions coming to the same address, figured that would be easier. Currently we are only using one profile but I have the others with full queues that were mine and my husbands previously and i do use them to fill in the active profile. I am kinda bummed they are getting rid of profiles but thankfully it doesnt really affect me right now.

My roommate and I share an account, using 2 profiles. We'll be canceling our subscription to the service when the feature is eliminated. I made sure to send Netflix a message through their suggestions portal letting them know how much I loved the service, but won't use it without that feature.

can we write to netflix and tell them to leave the profiles alone?
HipMom HipMom 7 years
Oh no! Nowmy stuff will get mixed with dh! That's just so stupid, I hope they don't go through with it. Otherwise I'll have to check the queue every time I send a dvd back to make sure that the next one is actually from the account of the one that was sent back. Confusing? And it hasn't even happened yet!

I didn't even know you could do that.

i have my own, and joined netflix when it first became available. from time to time, my kids and The Husband will ask for a specific movie and i'll add it (making sure i remember to move to the top of the queue of 400+ flicks!). but i really have no need for a separate profile, so no love lost with the new change.

I really loved Netflix profiles. My husband and I were able to create separate queues and even upped our subscription so we could both get 2 movies at a time. I'm really disappointed that this feature is going away.

We only have the one profile between us, but we try to make sure that everyone time we get new movies that it's not just MY movies or HIS movies. But one profile works pretty well for us.

i used blockbuster online because i could go into the store to pick up something new without mailing the movie back.

I LOVE my Netflix profiles. My husband and I keep 3 queues, one for him, one for me, and one for us to share. The queue was a DISASTER before they created profiles. I am so annoyed that this feature is going away.
