In 2014, Thor, god of thunder, is a woman, Marvel announced today. This isn't a temporary Thor substitute while the dude god is away; as Marvel editor Wil Moss says, "She's now the one and only Thor."
Few details have been revealed on where this Thor came from or how she plays into the Marvel universe. With today's news, Marvel emphasizes that the inclusion of a female Thor is, yes, to speak to an audience that doesn't see a fair representation in comic-book culture today: women and girls.
"This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is Thor," said series writer Jason Aaron. "This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it's unlike any Thor we've ever seen before."
The new Thor will debut in October and is the eighth Marvel title to feature a female lead. We're excited to see a woman take the role of this legendary superhero (it makes for great cosplay!), but of course the Internet has mixed feelings regarding this news.
