The New York Times Takes Notice of Facebook's 25 Random Things About Me Meme

Have You Done Facebook's 25 Random Things Meme Yet?

Are you on Facebook? Then there is no way you haven't heard of the 25 Random Things About Me meme. It's a note that works like a chain letter, where you fill out 25 random facts about yourself. Once you're done, you're supposed to tag other friends, so they have to fill it out, and so on and so forth. While I gave up chain letters long ago (and chain emails, ugh), somehow I got sucked into doing this one. My defense? Everybody's doing it!

Everybody's doing it so much that the New York Times took notice of the phenomena and investigated it, calling it a "creative way to indulge in social networking without coming off as needy or shamelessly self-absorbed."

Self-absorbed is a little how I felt when I wrote my 25 Things, but darned if it wasn't fun. I've noticed that the people on my friends list resisted the meme at first, but have since fallen one by one like dominoes, succumbing to think of fun facts about themselves. Fear of missing out, maybe.

In any case, tell me, Facebook users; have you done the 25 Random Things About Me note?

I think the 25 things lists are great! There are no boundaries so you/your friends can feel free to put what ever they feel like. I learned so much about friends that I've had forever. I'm thinking about printing all of my friends lists up and making a book to give away for Valentines Day or birthdays. There is nothing wrong with feeling like you want to share your self, or not sharing yourself.

turkey jerky i agree---i was adamant about not doing this but then i caved because I really really loved reading about everyone else so much. So, I finally made mine---it was really long (i can't keep anything short)! But I still love reading about everyone--I find them so interesting!

I did it and it was pretty interesting to find out things about people that doesn't come up in normal conversation. Sometimes, it is easier to tell write things out and let your friends read and find out about it than to just tell them face to face.

I have to say that I am a proud "non-facebooker". Whatever happened to sitting down with someone and talking to them and learning these [25]things in person!?

i thought it was fun to read as well as share because it says a lot about people. plus it was interesting to see what people choose to reveal with the options of facts, goals and dreams. i of course did a mix of all three but some people only did facts while others only listed dreams/goals.

This isn't a meme. it's a chain letter. It drives me batty when people throw words around that they don't know how to define.

I've been tagged a lot too but I don't want to do it. I wont do it, actually. I probably couldn't think of 25 things, and even if I could, I don't want to post all that information about myself on the internet.

Haven't done it. REFUSE to do it. I hate chain anything! I rarely use facebook anyway.

I started out refusing (and I'm usually really stubborn about these things), but I wound up doing it...pretty much only because I enjoyed reading others' lists. Learned some new things about my friends. Only fair that I contribute and let them learn some quirky things about me. I pretty much only tagged those who tagged me, and others who have already done it.

I haven't done it yet, but my friend are falling like flies, and I'll do mine this weekend. I think I will call the note "25 ways to jump on the bandwagon." I have enjoyed reading strange things about my friends from childhood, and I haven't really found anything TMI. Mostly I am enjoying seeing how alike some of my old friends and I are 10 to 15 years after our last contact.

I was tagged to do it but I refuse. None of my friends (as great friends they may be) cares to read that much about me. Just I don't read other people's 25 things either. I just don't care enough :/

Been tagged. I really don't want to do it... but I'm sure I'll get bored one day and actually give in. I comment on other people's tho. It's EVERYWHERE!
