It's Real! Marty McFly's Hoverboard Is Now on Kickstarter

Oct 21 2014 - 10:12am

We've been dreaming of this day since 1989's Back to the Future Part II. Marty McFly's hoverboard, ladies and gentlemen, is now a reality. Hendo Hover [1] is a $10,000 levitating ride that's now on Kickstarter — and no, this isn't a prank [2].

Hendo Hover uses high-powered magnets to lift heavy things. The board itself weighs 100 pounds, and it can float about one inch off the ground. The strength of the board's magnetic field is concentrated and amplified to give the hoverboard lift, propulsion, and control. How cool is that?! Its founder, Greg Henderson, is an architect who originally imagined levitating buildings out of harm's way, like during earthquakes. But once the hovering technology was in place . . . why not use it for a board?

For now, this futuristic tech is limited to a special copper surface, so don't expect to zip through city streets with your hoverboard just yet. But if you're a developer, you can pay $299 for the Whitebox Developer Kit, which includes all the tools you need to make your own stuff float, including a Hendo Hover engine set.
