Ahead of the Curve: Samsung's Galaxy Round Gets a Flexible Display

The Galaxy Round can literally rock and roll. Samsung's newest smartphone, which features the first curved display, launches Oct. 10 in Korea — but it won't be cheap.

Korean media outlets are reporting that the Galaxy Round, available in a "Luxury Brown" color, will cost around 1.089 million won, which is about $1,012. Although the Galaxy Round isn't quite ready for the mass market, a phone with a 5.7-inch super AMOLED curved display is an interesting proof of concept.

Two new features incorporate the rounded screen into the software. Roll Effect displays information like date, time, missed messages, and battery life when the phone is rocked to its side. With Side Mirror, users can select next and previous content by tilting the device left and right.

According to Samsung, the phone is more comfortable to hold because of its curved hardware and provides a true one-handed operation experience. Will the Galaxy Round become available in the US? We're not sure — but we are sure that more flexible displays are in our future. LG announced that production of bendable screens has begun, and patent applications indicate that flexible devices are on Apple's radar as well.
