Samsung's Instinct Will Cost You a Pretty Penny at Best Buy

Samsung's Instinct Will Cost You a Pretty Penny at Best Buy

One of Samsung's most popular handsets, the Instinct, will soon be coming to Best Buy — in the pink version. Sweet, right? The only catch is it will cost $599, which is insane in my opinion.

So it does have a touchscreen, a 2-megapixel digital camera, Bluetooth compatibility, and is stylin', but that doesn't explain the hefty price tag. The 8GB iPhone 3G is only $189 at Best Buy, so the math doesn't add up on this one. Just sayin'. Would you pay $599 for this phone?

I'll stick with my iPhone! It's the best phone out there, IMO.

The price is entirely too high. But the question is..is it THAT high because it's unlocked &can be used with any carrier?? Most companies like to jack the price up sky high just cuz the phone's unlocked..

No, I wouldn't pay that much. *IF* I wanted to pay that much for a phone, I would have gotten to the iPhone when it was close to that price :p I think Samsung/Best Buy is making a mistake with this one..

Cell phones and plans are insanely overpriced, in my opinion. When did it become okay to charge such insane prices for cell phones?!!? The purple is cute, though.

Ditto margo! I'm just waiting for an iPhone with cheaper monthly payments. My sis has an iPhone, and I love it, but I can't stomach the monthly rate...it's practically like paying health insurance! Yay for my unsmart Verizon Motorola + toting my laptop everywhere. :P

So you pay $599 for a phone that does not come close to the capabilities the iPhone has? The Instinct will be Extinct in time, unlike the iPhone. The iPhone can constantly be molded to your liking with the available apps and software functions. Personally I think Samsung and others have been brainwashed if they believe their product is worth that much or that the phone is somehow on level with the iPhone.

margo, I completely agree. I really doubt the phone will be that much when they announce the with-2-yr-contract thing. I definitely wouldn't buy it for the full retail price but I honestly think the instinct is better than the iphone. the pink is so cute!

I had the Instinct for about a month. The phone is pretty good, and you get a lot of service for a reasonably low monthly price from Sprint (Simply Everything Plan, $99). But, in my opinion, the phone is not worth $599, especially since it is nothing more than a bad copy of the iPhone.

Looks cheap and Sprint sucks.

ALL cell phones (and especially smartphones) cost ridiculous amounts of money WITHOUT SERVICE CONTRACTS. The Instinct's $599 without a service plan from Sprint? Because that's about right, and comparable to a contract-free (which is really what everyone WANTS, no contracts) iPhone. Without a service plan from AT&T (if you could get it that way, they said they'd sell contract-free iPhones "sometime in the future"), the iPhone is $599 (8GB) and $699 (16GB). wow, not even the iphone costs that much!

The real question is what's the difference in the MONTHLY price? The iPhone only costs as little as it does because the data plans are so expensive, so the difference (plus change) is spread over the contract period. Not that I think most people think about stuff like that. You HAVE to include the monthly plan (plus taxes & system access fees) when you calculate the price of a phone. Otherwise you're fooling yourself.
