Should You Refrigerate Batteries?

Ask a Geek Girl: Should I Store Batteries in the Fridge?

When I was a kid my dad always kept his batteries stored in the top door shelf of the fridge — a habit I thought everyone subscribed to until I went away to college and realized most people don't keep batteries, butter, and Diet Coke together. A reader recently posed the question whether storing batteries in the fridge really helps them last longer, and I decided it was high time I investigate.

Find out what I learned about the practice after the jump!

The experts say no . . . err, probably not. Storing batteries in the freezer or fridge won't prolong their life, but it may slow down the process of them losing charge if you live in a really hot climate. Scientific tests say: batteries stored at refrigerator temperatures do indeed last longer than batteries stored at higher temperatures, but on average the difference is only a few percentage points. So, if you live someplace where the thermostat hits 85 to 100 (or more!) degrees regularly, put those Energizers on ice. And, for the sake of being green and saving dough, you might want to go ahead and invest in some rechargeable batteries to boot.
