A Weather-Predicting Satellite Was Just Launched Into Space

When SpaceX says third time's a charm, it really means it. After having difficulties launching the DSCOVR space satellite during previous attempts, it was finally launched. The satellite has a long journey — a million miles, to be exact — to the Lagrange Points. It's SpaceX's first mission into deep space. Once the satellite is in this area, it can warn us earthlings about geomagnetic storms in advance.

DSCOVR was launched with its Falcon 9 rocket and the original plan was to have the rocket's first stage land in the Atlantic Ocean. This concept is really cool because it would mean that we would be a step closer to developing reusable rockets — a big money saver when it comes to space travel. Unfortunately, the rough weather made it impossible to bring the rocket back down to earth; if they attempted to do so, it was likely that it would be completely damaged. Nevertheless, SpaceX finally got the satellite on its way to the depths of space. Check out how it all went down above.
