The first seven days of December had plenty of great geek-stagrams from geeks we love — but our favorites celebrated the holidays and one of the most revered human rights activists of our time. See pictures from NASA, Veronica Belmont, and more in the top five social media snaps of the week!
NASA to Nelson Mandela: We Honor You
Antiapartheid leader Nelson Mandela passed away this week, and the US space agency offered a fitting tribute, with a photo of Cape Town, South Africa, taken from the International Space Station.
"In honor of the anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela, who passed away today at the age of 95, here is an image of Cape Town, South Africa, from space. This photo was taken on May 9, 2013, by Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield while living and working aboard the International Space Station. Hadfield tweeted this image and wrote, 'Cape Town, South Africa, and the South Atlantic calling to forever.'"
Welcome to the Selfie Side
The leader of the Dark Side heralded a new age in the Star Wars franchise. The space opera has joined Instagram officially, and its inaugural snap was, of course, of Darth Vader.
"Another day at the office. #StarWars #DarthVader #selfies #gpom"
"I made a blinky! My soldering could be a little neater, but it worked!"
A Very Merry Cthulhu Christmas
The Star Wars Craft Book author Bonnie Burton is celebrating the holidays with our favorite extraterrestrial shape-shifting octopus.
"HAPPY CTHULHU CHRISTMAS! #vandaleyesFollowing"
Dead Shopping Three
Geek & Sundry's Felicia Day finds, of all things, fashion in Dead Rising 3.
"A shop I found in Dead Rising 3 full of upscale women's clothing. I got excited, like when you find a keychain with your name on it at a tourist trap. #12000zombieskilled"
