The results are in! The latest State of the Internet [2] report has been released, ranking Internet speeds by state from slow to fast. So, where does your area stand?

In the map above, Broadview Net [3] maps the data, showing the highest speeds in dark green and the slowest speeds in dark red. So the best Internet connection is — drumroll please — Virginia, with 13.7 mbps (megabites per second)! Is it a coincidence that the home state of the Central Intelligence Agency has the fastest Internet? We think not. The land of tech, Silicon Valley, CA, comes in at an abysmal No. 20 with 10.9 mbps.

The Midwest and East and West Coasts get better connection speeds, while the less-populated Southern states (namely Arkansas and Kentucky) are left with slower Internet.

The State of the Internet report also details speeds around the world and found that South Korea, with a 23.6 mbps average — nearly double the US's top connection — has the fastest Internet. South Korea trumps Japan, in second place with a 14.6 mbps average.

Below are the US's top 10 states for Internet. For the full list, head here [5].

All of this brings to mind net neutrality [7], an extremely hot topic these days. "Fairness" in terms of Internet speeds is now a national matter because some Internet providers favor companies by offering them faster, more reliable connections. That's not fair for smaller firms who can't afford that paid prioritization.

In any case, we now know which state has the best Internet to feed our Netflix addiction [8]. We also know that the fastest public WiFi in the US [9] is found at Starbucks. In second place? McDonald's of all places!

The more you know . . .
