Technology Dating Advice on When to Delete Your Ex From Your Cell Phone and Facebook page

Tech Dating 101: Getting Your Ex Out of Your Digital Life

Perplexed by a romantic text? Get your digital dating questions answered in geeksugar's Tech Dating 101 series, where I answer anything from changing your relationship status online to texting during a date. Today's post tackles what happens when a love that once bloomed has wilted.

What's the digital protocol for keeping your ex "around" when you break up? He may be out of your life, but still in your cell phone with a special ringtone, a sweet picture that comes up when he calls — or on your Facebook page, even if he's not making comments.

Do you do a delete from your phone, and de-friend him completely? See what I have to say when you

.

In general, right when you're post breakup, the best thing to do is to gradually edge him out. That means you can keep him in your cell phone if you want, but you should take off any special ringtone or the picture that came up when he called.

As for Facebook, if the breakup was somewhat amicable, there's no need to de-friend but to avoid being reminded of him every time someone comments on a photo of him or writes on his Wall, set Facebook to hide his updates, so you can stay FB friends but don't have to know his Top 5 Movies.

Messy, painful breakup? Feel free to de-friend him, especially since Facebook doesn't blare that info, and there's no reason you need to keep up on his digital life, and vice versa.

And of course, I also advise following The New Relationship Rule. If you've been hanging on to digital vestiges of an ex, getting into a new relationship is a good time to cut them out of your phone and Facebook once and for all.

Sugar, can you at least mark a post [From The Archives!] or something so before I won't have to waste my time clicking a link to something that I commented on 4 months ago. If the Sugar network can't come up with enough original topics that they have to recycle the old ones every few months, then maybe you all shouldn't be posting new articles as much!

I don't delete pictures because I like the memories. I also don't unfriend ex's unless the breakup is awful and they end up bothering me online. I like to remain friendly with ex boyfriends if it's possible, so I don't like to remove phone numbers either.

speaking from my perspective, and i have a HORRIBLE breakup, i had my older sister delete every picture i had of him on my laptop, and all the ones i had copies of i gave back to him in a box. and on top of that we're not friends on any social network i have. and i like it that way.

i tend to leave numbers on my phone so that i know when to NOT pick up. if i hear his ringtone, i don't even have to look at my phone.

My ex took the extreme route and blocked me on Facebook. He's the crazy one, I promise. :)

None of this was an issue way back when I got my divorce. The one place that I did struggle with was my iPhoto library. What to do with the digital photos? Some of them I deleted right away. Others contained our son so I left them. Then with the advent of the Apple TV and streaming a slide show next thing you know there is the Ex up on the tv! Ugh. Finally iPhoto brought in a feature to hide photos! I probably could have burned them off onto a disc and just trashed them as well.

When I'm ready, I make a folder titled "All [Exboyfriend's Name] Pics" and put every single photo that has him in it, in the folder. That way, if I'm just browsing around my hard drive for pictures, I don't accidentally come across one. Depends on the break-up of course, but I just prefer to put them all away in a spot; I wouldn't feel right deleting them.
