Telling Twitter or Facebook You're Out of Town Can Make You a Robbery Target

PSA: Tweeting About Being on Vacay Can Make You a Target

Looks like we have more to worry about than just blurting out TMI on your Twitter or Facebook pages: a study reports that nearly half of users polled broadcast when they're out of town on their social networks, leaving them open to potential burglaries.

Seem far-fetched? It's not, as the Arizona man who was robbed in June after tweeting about being out of town can tell you.

It may seem alarmist, but I'm taking this to heart. What makes it tough is that when you tweet all the time, how could you not tell people that you're in a cool city on vacation? Maybe just leave out the tweets where you explicitly say you're out of the house and for how long.

The reporter said a tip was to set Twitter to only people you know. But what if the thief is someone you know?

I only have close family and friends on my accounts and I live in a man guarded community so the chances are slim but I still wouldn't take any chances! I was home alone for a couple weeks while my husband was out of town and I was scared to post anything about that in fear that someone else might read it and try and get to me.

your followers would have to know where you lived.. so i'm not terribly worried, unless for some reason i tweet my address along with my vacation announcement.. (my acct only has my first name and a vague location i.e. a large city)

Yeah, I totally just did that like five minutes ago. But my husband will still be home, so I'm not worried. I do tend to be pretty strict about not announcing where I'll be around town until after I've been there and left though. I don't want any crazy stalkers!
