It seems that we're bombarded with new cell phone models releasing almost daily, but back in the late '80s and early '90s a cell phone was a novelty. So novel, in fact, that you needed a huge battery and receiver pack to carry along with the phone! I found this old Radio Shack commercial touting how "affordable and portable" the new cellular phone is, and it not only proves how far we've come in our cell phone design, but also that bad tech table manners have been around longer than I thought.
