Vintage Geek: Bill Cosby's Texas Instruments Ad


It's back to school time, which always gets me thinking about school supplies, school clothes and of course, my good old TI83. Switched put together a list of the Best-Ever Celebrity Gadget Ads last week that served as a great follow up to our look at the Top 10 Celebrity Gadget Endorsements of current day and included a fantastic retro geek Texas Instruments commercial.

The ad, which was made in 1981, features Bill Cosby talking about a price drop for the Texas Instruments TI 99/4A computer — or as he puts it in the ad, "the one with all the memory and tons of software."

As Switched notes, at the time the TI 99/4A was competing against the Commodore's inexpensive Vic-20 and Radio Shack's popular Color Computer so it was virtually forced to drop its price. Of course, a little boost from Bill Cosby, who was still at the height of his Cosby Show fame, did help. To watch the video, read more
