Website BookMooch is an Online Book Trading Service

Website of the Day: BookMooch

Recycle, reuse, reread! BookMooch is totally a website of my dreams. While I've been marveling about finding the perfect Netflix-for-books service, I never even thought about the green option! BookMooch is light years ahead of me — they provide the means for you to to trade and receive used books — the only cost you incur is the price to get your pages in the mail.

When you type in the books you're done with and want to give away, you get a tenth of a point and you get one point when you give a book away on BookMooch. Each point is redeemable for one book that's been offered on the site by another user. For every three books you receive, you have to give one away, just to keep the system going. If a book you want isn't in the database yet, put it on your wishlist and you'll be notified by email when it comes in! This gives mooching a really, really good name.

I signed up and started using it! It's very easy and I have two books coming to me. I've sent off 4 books to people (one to Australia) and the shipping costs equaled about $11 (which is less than the price of a paperback). Thank you so much for posting this site! I love it!

It's a good idea in theory, but recently I've discovered the magic wonder of the public library. My county has it set up so you can search for books online, place holds and indicate which library within the county you want to pick it up at. All I have to do is whiz in snatch the books off the holds shelf and they even have an automated check out so I don't even have to wait in line! Yay! for Montgomery County, Maryland Public Library System!

I've been using http://www.booksfree.com/ and I love it. Yes the books have to come media mail so they take about a week or so but I have a big enough plan that I have them timed to leave and come back and roughly the same times. I have looked at BookMooch for my unused books, but usually i just bring them to my local used paperback store for trade in.

I use BookMooch, and I adore it. I agree with freegracefrom - the intimate feel and the interface are really great. And they've made a LOT of improvements in the last 6 months, and you can donate your points to charities if you'd like (public libraries, etc.) so they can mooch books too.

I use bookmooch myself. I might someday migrate to paperbackswap because it seems like a lot more people go there, but I kind of like the intimate feeling of bookmooch. The layout is much more managable, in my opinion. I'm actually waiting on a book to arrive in the mail right now. Anyday now, I hope!

Another similar website that I use (and may have also previously been feature here) is Paperbackswap. Same concept - trade books you don't want for credits and use those credits to get books you do want. It's also totally free! A lot of the members previously swapped at Bookmooch and have found PBS to be a lot better. http://www.paperbackswap.com/index.php?n=7&r_by=upbookgirl

You actually get to keep them, TidalWive--you don't have to send the books you receive back or on to anyone.
