It was a slow news week for gadgets after last week's CES [1], but there were still plenty of geeky stories of interest. From Google threatening to pull out of China completely to NBC's late-night TV drama, breaking news stories kept me on my toes. Check out all of that and more of my favorite stories from this week that you may have missed — especially my list of the 30 geekiest movies of all time.

Conan to DVR: Thanks, but No Thanks

In late-night entertainment news, Conan O'Brien announced he did not support a time change for the Tonight Show, which historically airs at 11:35 p.m. — even if people record it with their DVRs to watch later [2].

Google Drama in China

After a targeted email attack on Gmail users and human-rights activists in China, Google announced it may pull out of the country's search market all together [3].

The Golden Globes Go Geeky

Award season is upon us! This year, the Golden Globes got a geeky makeover [4]. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association and NBC have been gearing up for the big show by streaming events on Facebook and Ustream to bring you retrospective recaps of all the award-show goodness you can handle, and have also partnered with Digg and Mashable for daily updates and countdowns. Did you catch the first episode of Lifetime's new season of Project Runway? This season features a great geeky addition! [7] Usually the designers are clinging to their notebooks and paper sketches for ideas and inspiration, but with the help of HP's Touchsmart swiveling screen, the new batch of recruits can easily alter their designs on the fly, and add a new layer of sophistication by transforming the notebook into a portable and powerful digital sketchpad.

Verizon Drops the Cost of Voice Plans

Let the calling plan price wars begin! Verizon Wireless has dropped the prices [9] on its National Talk, and National Talk and Text plans by about $30 each. Existing customers can switch to these new rate plans without penalties or contract extensions.
