What Will You Do With Your Old iPhone When You get an iPhone 3G?

What Will You Do With Your Old iPhone?

If you're one of the many who has already picked up an iPhone 3G (or will be getting one pretty soon), are you also one of the many who already had an iPhone? Old man iPhone 1.0, 2G, whatever you want to call it?

I am among these ranks too and have been debating forever now on what to do with my old phone, now that I am sporting a hot new fingerprint-free iPhone 3G.

Should you get cash for it with Flipswap? Sell it on Craigslist to a tech-needy soul, or will you give it to a deserving and envious younger sibling? Or maybe you will recycle it way, way before its time?

Whatever you do with it, share your plan with me here!

If you get a chance in the future, please mention CellPhonesForSoldiers.com as an alternative for recycling... they sell the phones and take the money to buy phone cards for soldiers. Thanks

If I had one, I would donate it.

My iPhone v.1 is fine! It'll run the 2.0 firmware and I have all the apps. ;p I don't need 3G AT ALL and I have a handheld GPS device already. So I'm gonna keep using it? :D

So, somehow I've let my hubbie talk me in to this convoluted plan. He's getting the new 3G, and I'm replacing my Q with his old iPhone. "Don't get v1," I said. "Wait for v2, it'll be better." And somehow he gets the new toy and I get the hand-me-down. :-P Gotta love him, he's very persuasive.

I sold mine for $150.00 with all the accessories that I bought for it. I know it's a steal but all I needed was to make the money back for the cost of the new one. And after the hell I went through at Apple today I Heart My 3G!!!!

I sold my old one on Craiglist for 250$ and DH is selling his on Monday to the same person for 300$ (mine had a scratch) and I know the guy is unlocking them. At the AT&T store I was at you had to activate them on the spot.

I'm keeping the old one as a backup. It's still a fantastic phone, and mine has never given me any problems. Plus it's still under warranty.

I was so surprised to see how many people bought the iPhone 3G who already had the old one. I chocked it up to American consumerism at its finest, I was wondering what were your reasons for buying another iPhone were?

I'm keeping my original iphone for a bit longer. I bought a new Cooper Mini about two months ago, and went to lengths to make sure that my iphone could plug into the car, to both play music and make calls. The set up is flawless currently, so I won't be upgrading my phone until I find out if it will work just as well with my car. My husband may get a the 3G soon though, and I'll test it out with my car when he does. Until then, the (free!) 2.0 firmware upgrade is keeping me very entertained.

Yeah, my brother sold his old iphone for $400 on ebay yesterday. I asked him the SAME question TidelWave and he said it was because it was unlocked! Love the quote jennipoo!

Wow! I still have my light-pink motorola rzar... le boyfriend is getting the G3 though. To quote Dr. Suess: "They say I'm old-fashioned, and live in the past, but sometimes I think progress progresses too fast!"

Nor is it an option at the store near me. I also heard from a NY store that people who chose to go home instead of wait for activation were charged the full amount and once they activated the rest of the money would be refunded. Sounds like different things happening at different stores. Regardless - non activation results in much higher price which is why the non-3g phones are maintaining a $300 price range ish on places like craigslist and ebay. that really was my only point.

Not activating is not an option we are being given at the Fashion Island Apple store where I am at.

It's only $200 w/ a new contract. For those of us poor souls already w/ AT&T, my total w/ overnight shipping was closer to $450.

they actually do have to be activated in the store. I did however read that AT&T was having activation issues and sent people home to do it Right. So obviously they do not need to be activated in the store. Granted, it is preferred. But yes, when you pay $200 it is under the terms that you will activate it with AT&T. You can purchase the phone without a plan for $600; hence why they charge you if you do not activate it.

Sorry I should have been more specific - since you have to get it activated in the store in order to get the cheap price (or buy cheap and pay cancellation fee), the non 3-g phones might still maintain a high(er) price on the resell market because $300 is still less than $600. It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the next couple months. Also fun note, the AT&T service discount for apple employees got bumped up to 20% off monthly service bill (from either 15 or 10%).

oh, I am unable to sell mine as I dropped it last week and dented it on the volume button which is causing erratic volume control issues :-/

SillyGirl: The new #g ones do not have to be activiated in the store. It is extremely likely that the 3G iphone will be unlockable. Never underestimate geeks!
SillyGirl SillyGirl 7 years
People will pay more it since its so easy to crack. There are rumors that since the new ones are activated in the store (and other reasons) they cant be unlocked. Also - remember when you wipe your phone before you sell it to reload it as full as possible with music and wipe again. If you just wipe it once, your personal data can still be accessed (to the extent you care).

I really don't think you could get much for it since the newer version is $200. Why would i pay $300 for the old one when i can get the new one for cheaper?
BloodyFuFu BloodyFuFu 7 years
I waited to sell my old one, and I think it'll pay off now that 2.0 has been unlocked. Might be able to get a little more for it. Plus mine is cosmetically perfect since I've had it wrapped in an iSkin since the day it came out of its box. Good luck to me! But do I get the black or white 16GB?
