WiFi Phone Calls on Airplanes

Should Airlines Allow In-Flight Phone Calls Via WiFi?

In a recent USA Today article, I read about a man who was able to make in-flight phone calls on his iPhone during a flight using WiFi. With WiFi enabled, passengers on one of the 600 WiFi-enabled planes taking off in the US can use any number of video-chatting or voice programs like Skype or Gchat.

According to the article, a survey by the Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics found 45 percent of Americans thought voice calls should be banned on flights, while 40 percent said they should be allowed if they don't pose a safety risk.

When we polled you guys, 74 percent of you said you'd switch airlines to have WiFi. I used Google Video chat on a Virgin America flight last month and actually turned my computer's camera so a friend at home could see the clouds out of my window. The person sitting beside me even waved hello! Chatting live at 30,000 feet was a pretty surreal experience — I love Gogo In-flight Internet!

I actually voted Yes but realised that vote was incorrect, I actually meant Yes for wifi but to be able to do online chatting and not voice calls. It could get annoying when your trying to sleep and people all around you are just talking away on their phones.

Why would I want to listen inches away to some random person's conversation? People need to stop talking on their phone. Period. It can wait.

Please no. I can barely stand people having conversations on their phones when in restaurants, or even worse in bookstores. I can't imagine them having them on planes. While I agree people talk on the plane, but when you are having to deal with the noise of the airplane I suspect that people will be talking even louder into their phones. Plus, some people don't have the edit button when it comes to their cell phones. I have heard people talking about some of the most disgusting things in restaurants while on their cell phones, to the point where I have switched tables or left the restaurant. On a plane I don't have the option of switching seats. Not to mention since I travel for work, the flight is the only time I have a minute to myself without being required to check email or take calls from the boss or clients. I love that few hours of peace, and I'd be very sad to give it up.

someone talking on a phone wouldn't be any louder than someone chatting with the passenger next to them. even when everyone keeps totally silent, it's noisy in the cabin anyway so i don't see what harm a few extra convos would cause. i would love to be able to make calls from the air!

This would be a HELL NO! Bad enough having to listen to non-stop crying babies. Can you imagine the blather of "yeah, dude, I'm sitting up here in this airplane. Uh huh. Yeah. No, I got some peanuts...." UGHHH. I hope I make enough money someday to get my OWN plane! >P

I don't think any phone calls should be allowed in flight. It would be very annoying. I like to use Wifi for email.
