Yahoo and Google Mail to Get Social?

How would you feel if your beloved email service turned into a social-networking site? The the New York Times reports that companies like Google and Yahoo are hoping to turn their email systems into personalized homepage services (like iGoogle and MyYahoo). Yahoo is currently testing a monitoring system that will detect the strength of your relationship to someone by how often you email or IM them. Yahoo has also mentioned extending your display info in a "profile page" format, which receives minifeeds similar to Facebook and can tell you when your friends' birthdays are. This sounds really beneficial and simple — almost like the mail provider does the guesswork for you — but will undoubtedly be met with some skepticism. What do you think of the idea?

No. Definitely, no. If I wanted to do social networking online, I will do that, but my email does not need to be tweaked any more. (Okay, they could filter spam more, and not drop my emails, but that's all!)

This is the only "social networking" site I participate in. I just don't get myspace or facebook or any of the other million copycat networks... why do we need another one?!

Sounds cool! Especially if I can make a little Google version of myself like the people in the picture. :)

I don't know. I like my gmail just the way it is, thanks. No need for any networking there...I know who I need to talk to and when, thank you very much.

Plain e-mail is for suckers. I invite Yahoo to gleen as much personal information about me as possible, and use it to upgrade and enrich my life. Then they can sell that information and make a handsome profit for themselves. Wow, Big Brother, new outfit.

Eh, why can't we just keep it at plain email.
