Trying to get your hands on an iPhone 5 at the Apple Store today? We're sorry to say, but long lines await you. Fortunately, there are plenty of alternatives, like the more cost-effective iPhone 4 and 4S or a smartphone that's — dare we say — not made by Apple. But 'tis the season of changing colors, so here are five equally stylish, equally smart iPhone 5 alternatives.
Nokia Lumia 900 Windows Phone ($50 with contract, $450 without)
The rounded curvature of the Nokia Lumia 's polycarbonate body is the antithesis of bulky, even with a 4.3-inch touch-screen display. The phone runs Windows 8 — a bold, colorful mobile platform whose only downfall is the lack of apps relative to iOS or Android. It has an 8MP camera and a 1MP front-facing camera with flash, three-times zoom, and highly detailed Carl Zeiss photo optics.
8X Windows Phone by HTC (pricing not yet available)
We took a look at the Windows Phone 8X and 8S earlier this week and were in awe of the sleek design and brilliant color. The phone — available on AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and T-Mobile in November — has a four-inch display, built-in Beats Audio, an 8 MP rear camera, 1080p video recording, and a 2.1 MP front-facing camera.
Samsung Galaxy S III Android ($200)
The most impressive feature of the Samsung Galaxy S III is the whopping 4.8-inch HD display whose 16:9 aspect ratio is optimal for ebooks, games, and video. The 8MP camera has a burst shot option that takes photos at a rate of 3.3 shots per second. Plus, the 1.9 MP front-facing camera tracks eye movement, so your screen stays active as long as you're in front of it.
Xperia Ion Android Phone by Sony ($100 with contract, $450 without contract)
Since the Xperia Ion is part of the Sony Entertainment Network, movies purchased from the PlayStation store are ready to view on the phone's 4.6-inch display. The phone's also compatible with a SmartDock that lets you share videos and photos to your TV via an HDMI cable. The 12MP rear camera can take sweeping 3D panoramas and capture 1080p HD video. The front-facing camera is 1MP with 720p video capability.
Motorola Atrix HD Android Phone ($100 with contract, $450 without contract)
The sleek Motorola Atrix HD has a standout feature called Smartactions, which automates actions like silencing the ringer if you have a meeting on your calendar at that time or auto-replying to text messages when you're driving. The 4.5-inch HD display, 8 MP camera, and 1080p video recorder aren't too shabby either.
