Dec 20 2013 - 1:57am

Like her Scandal character, Olivia Pope, Kerry Washington knows how to handle any situation. From a secret summer wedding [1] to keeping her pregnancy under wraps [2], the actress did it all in 2013, but that doesn’t mean she wasn’t in the spotlight. In addition to having a top TV drama with skyrocketing ratings, she also covered nearly a dozen magazines — including landing the coveted title of People's best dressed — was nominated for a historic Emmy, hosted Saturday Night Live [3], and just snagged two more nominations for SAG and Golden Globe awards.

In February, Kerry swept a couple NAACP Image Awards, winning best supporting actress in a drama for Django Unchained and outstanding actress in a TV series for Scandal. Her hit show with costars Tony Goldwyn and Bellamy Young also won outstanding TV series.

Kerry surprised the world with a secret wedding [5] this Summer. She wed San Francisco 49er Nnamdi Asomugha [6] in a small Hailey, ID, ceremony on June 24.

Kerry graced the cover of multiple magazines this year, including August's Vanity Fair, Glamour, Lucky, Elle, and more. She took over newsstands everywhere!

Kerry was named People's best dressed woman of 2013 [8] in September and also landed the No. 2 spot on its Most Beautiful People list [9] in April, just behind Gwyneth Paltrow [10].

When Kerry was nominated for outstanding lead actress in a drama at the 2013 Emmys, she made history. Though she didn't win for Scandal in September, she was the fifth African-American actress ever nominated.

In October, Kerry joined Neutrogena [11] as a creative consultant and spokeswoman, though you won't see her in ads until 2014.

In October, Kerry's pregnancy news broke — she and her husband, Nnamdi Asomugha, are expecting a baby [12] next year! However, in recent Scandal set photos, you can barely see her bump.

Kerry hosted Saturday Night Live in November, and one of her most memorable skits was a parody of "What Does the Fox Say?" [13] — aka one of the most viral songs of the year.

It's a December to remember for Kerry. On the heels of her Emmy nomination earlier this year, she also is up for a SAG award [14] for Scandal and a Golden Globe [15] for best actress.
