20th Century Beauty Quiz Part One

Bella Quiz: 20th Century Beauty, Part I

The nerd in me loves history and the lady in me loves makeup. So, imagine my excitement levels when a dear friend of mine lent me Face of the Century: 100 Years of Makeup and Style, a great coffee table book she picked up at a yard sale.

Filled with old pictures and writer Kate de Castelbajac's brilliant bits of beauty information, the book provides the details on makeup and style one decade at a time. Want to learn some fun facts from this read? Take my quiz to test your makeup smarts from the 1900s-1940s, and look for my quiz on the 1950s-1990s to come.

I would love that book. On a side note 25 cents in the context of 1915 seemed like a lot of money...I did some net snooping and came up with this comparison: A bottle of Worchestershire sauce was about 10 cents. If you figure today a bottle would be about 3 bucks, right? So 25 cents then "roughly" amounts to 7-8 dollars..or so. (Ok not perfect math but anyways)...that's about right for a drugstore mascara product, if anything these days that's on the cheaper side since some can be 12-17 dollars even when its a drugstore line. I got this info from a page of prices from New Jersey in 1915..some interesting reading: http://www.gti.net/mocolib1/prices/1915.html

I need to check for that book, especially for anything before the 80s.

I agree with FlamesofJune . . . I probably wouldn't have picked up this book if I saw it in the store, but that quiz was really interesting! Now it makes me want to check out the book!
