All-Blonde Island to Open in the Maldives

A Swanky Vacation Spot Will Be Staffed by Blondes Only

In today's you've-got-to-be-kidding-me news, a Lithuanian firm has plans to open a resort on a private island in the Maldives, and it's to be staffed solely by blond women. Olialia (pronounced ooh-la-la, no joke), the firm behind the controversial plan, is set to open the resort in 2015.

Female guests will be offered the opportunity to head to an on-site education center, where they'll learn "how to always be perfect and look great." Groan. As you can imagine, the plans, which could be construed as sexist, discriminatory, and feeding into stereotypes, aren't going over very well. Not to mention the fact that local laws state that at least 50 percent of the staff must be residents of the community — a group that is not naturally flaxen-haired.

Still, the company finds no problems with the plan and insists that it isn't just about looks. "Our girls [the staff] are very smart and they have degrees. All of them want to do something with their lives. They have lots of business ideas," said Olialia's Giedre Pukiene. Your thoughts?

Kohina.. of all the Mexican restaurants in the DFW area... there are NO WHITE PEOPLE who work there... NONE. Not one.. not a server, busboy, manager, host. Who freakin cares!!!!!!!!!! People need to quick being such sissies and getting their feelings hurt so easily.

It's stupid, yes, but who cares? There are way more travesties and tragedies going on in the world. On another note, people really need to learn their vocabulary. RACISM is hatred or differential treatment toward someone because of their RACE (by the way, that's skin color; it does not refer to ethnicity nor culture), not their hair color. Maybe the outrage should be directed toward the naiivete off the nation who have blindly accepted that every single prejudice (which is not a bad word people) is the end of the world. It's gets to the point where political correctness becomes tyranny. I'm not saying this is not wrong, but it also doesn't compare to the real problems of today...

I think the whole thing is ridiculous, and it probably won't even happen. I'm with Anon #5 -- if they're smart and have degrees, that should be what counts... not the color of their hair. But it all smells like a publicity stunt to me.
Jessiebanana Jessiebanana 6 years's no different than only hiring women that look good in a bikini. Obviously as a Black person I can't be blond, but if they want a hotel full on blondies...go for it.

The problem here is that people will likely buy into this. Women are going to be applying to work there, and people will be looking to stay there. If no one gives them business they won't be able to open.

Oh please Elle. The issue is not the lack of diversity but the actual company policy. I'm sure if a blonde person wanted to work at a Mexican restaurant they wouldn't be turned down because they don't have brown hair. It's not like Mexican restaurants have signs that say "Brunettes Only Apply". Well that's what this company is essentially doing. Even if you're the most qualified person for the job it won't matter because you're not blonde according to this company. How is any of that funny? Enlighten me please.
LOL I can't believe people get so offended by stuff like this? It's like everyone in America thinks we have to all be 100% equal all the time, everywhere, in everything.. So what? Should they have a brunette, a blond, a redhead (is that politically correct?), a mexican, a european, chinese, african.. 1 woman and 1 man from each category? And then no one will be offended! Should I be offended when I go to Mi Cocina and their waitstaff is only people who look mexican? Should it offend me that there are no blonde haired white people working there? No, obviously I should not be offended! Who cares?!?! It's funny!!!!!!! LOL gosh

I don't see how anyone could think this is funny or not even find offense to this. Enacting a policy that only hires blondes is not only sexist but racist. It's seriously offensive. But like Francoisehardly said, I don't have to go there. Kind of like how I'll never go to Jamaica (I even gave up Red Stripe) because they're like the most homophobic country on Earth. They both could have beaches made of gold and I still wouldn't step foot on either place.

I don't mind this at all, it seems funny .. :) They probably shouldn't go ahead with it though because so many people will be against it

Enjoy getting sued by the EU, Olialia.

It's a stupid idea, but whatever. I don't have to go there. This doesn't help dumb blonde stereotypes. "How to always be perfect and look great". So be a mindless robot?

As far as gimmicks go, I don't get this one. It's bound to offend more people than it appeals to.
