Average Features Found to Be Most Beautiful 2009-12-18 12:02:23

Average-Looking Women May Be the Most Attractive

Turns out that being an average Jane could make you the most beautiful woman of all. Researchers at UCSD and the University of Toronto have found that average facial proportions, in particular the distance between eyes and mouth and the horizontal distance between the eyes, are considered most attractive. They hypothesize that this is the case because your brain takes in the structure of every face you see and then averages them unconsciously to yield an ideal.

Do you think this is really true, though? Would anyone dispute that Michelle Pfeiffer is exceptionally beautiful? And she has exceptionally, very noticeably wide-set eyes. Another legendary beauty, Sophia Loren, has quite a bit of space between her eyes and mouth. So what do you think all this suggests? Are these women's other features so magnificent that it outweighs their "poor" proportions, or are researchers mistaking what people think is "nice-looking" for actual beauty, which is a wholly different thing?

pretty sure they don't mean that "average people" are the most beautiful. One of my psychology classes talked about this last year and it's the faces that are "average" so "proportional" that are considered the most beautiful. So a 10 has the most proportional face so to speak and a 5 in attraciveness is not seen as proportional. Of course everyone has their own preferences!

It sounds cliched, but I really think beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

oh, and i also find a large part of psychological research to be BS.

lol ok ok. but i still dont get why anyone researches this stuff when they cant even draw conclusions out of it. people like attractive people? GOT IT. people will still always make their own conclusions about what they find attractive or not.

plasticine, the researchers who are working on this project are psychologists and probably not qualified to research cancer. Let them have their fun, it's not like there are less cancer researchers because of it

i agree with jessiebanana. i think this may just mean that some faces are more pleasant for our brains to process, but still means nothing about true beauty. i find myself more attracted to strange faces with off symmetry because it makes me take notice and try to figure out what is so off about the face. also, why are researchers researching this?? can they apply it to us feeling better about ourselves, or is this just a tip for plastic surgeons?? because either way i dont see why money goes into this kind of crap. CURE CANCER PLEASE

I think to have average facial proportions is generally pretty, but I think the exceptional beauties never do.

Having the AVERAGE MEAN in facial proportions does NOT mean "average-looking." That's a complete misinterpretation. In fact, it's the opposite. If a woman happens to have an average mean in facial proportions, she is considered ideal (NOT average at all).

Yeah, I've seen studies like this before. I don't think they are really saying (to be a bit crude) that a man or woman that's a 5 would be more attractive than a 10, but equal proportions in the face are most appealing.

I think that this is very similar to findings that say we prefer symmetry in faces, non?
