Will You Accept This Contouring Brush? 6 Makeup Secrets From the Bachelor Girls

Mar 27 2017 - 7:30pm

The Bachelor [1] is a show about finding love, but with 25 women vying for one man, it's also a fierce competition. This requires the prettiest game face possible via an assortment of beauty techniques to catch the eye of men like Nick Viall — and a lot goes into making a big enough impression to score a one-on-one date.

Celebrity makeup artist Suzie Moldavon [2] knows this very well since she's been consulting and making up various Bachelor contestants from season 19 through the current season. In addition to running brow business Flybrow [3], Moldavon has worked with everyone from Lady Gaga [4] to Meghan McCain [5] and has gained a following with Bachelor girls like Sarah Vendal [6], Lauren Bushnell [7], JoJo Fletcher [8], Becca Tilley [9], and more.

To get an idea of what goes into getting Bachelor ready, we sat down with Moldavon to steal six beauty tips that are guaranteed to help you get that rose.

You'll want to look ready for your close-up but also very, very natural.

The Tip: While the competition might seem like it demands high-glamour Hollywood style, Moldavon stresses that all the girls she works with want to look as natural and makeup-free as possible.

"These girls were born stunning," she revealed. "They like to look like an elevated version of themselves."

According to Moldavon, this means mixing multiple foundations together to create a unique base. "What takes them from regular to elevated is that we spend 45 minutes putting their makeup on," she said, laughing. "It's really every detail."

Moldavon has a few favorites for mixing a foundation base: she likes Make Up For Ever's HD Foundation [10] ($43) ("It's buildable"), Giorgio Armani Fluid Sheer [11] ($62) ("If someone has perfect skin, it's a glowier, thinner finish"), and Ashunta Perfect Blend Sticks [12] ($40) ("I like to go over foundation with a little bit of that to give it more dimension").

For a more reasonably priced alternative, Moldavon recommends NYX's Born to Glow Illuminator [13] ($9), which Lauren Bushnell tipped her off to. To elevate this technique further, add a drop of Dermologica's Skin Hydrating Booster [14] ($59) to smooth and hydrate and Becca Shimmer Skin Perfector [15] ($38) for an added glow.

Bachelor girls love matte lips for date night.

The Tip: The one thing Moldavon has noticed is that fans all want to know what Bachelor girls do for their lips. Funny enough, Bachelor contestants all want matte lips just like Kylie Jenner's. Moldavon loves this type of formula because it's long lasting (i.e. great for date nights and kissing) but does note that it can be drying. She has a fix for that, though!

Moldavon recommends using Tarte's Tartiest Quick Dry Matte Lip Paint [16] ($20) because the product is especially long lasting and has a huge selection of colors, from nude to vampy. She also likes Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick [17] ($24) and Anastasia's liquid matte lip [18] ($20) as well as Nudestix [19] ($24), an affordable favorite of Moldavon's that she loves in both Belle and Entice colorways.

Moldavon suggests moisturizing your pout with Burt's Bees Lip Balm [20] ($3) or Lucas's Papaw Ointment [21] ($5) before applying the lipstick. Add this step when you start your face, and by the time you get to your lips, you'll have a base ready for an all-day stain.

Full eyelashes catch a guy's eye — and take a lot of work to achieve.

The Tip: Full lashes are a sure bet to draw in someone's eye, but it takes a lot to create this effect.

"All the drama is at the lashline," Moldavon explained. "Even if they have amazing lashes, like both Sarah [Vendal] and Lauren [Bushnell], I still like to add extras for that wow factor."

Lashes sometimes get forgotten, but to Moldavon and the Bachelor girls, it's this little extra effort that makes a face flawless.

Moldavon doesn't use strip lashes to create this but instead opts for individuals from Glad Lash in under, short, and medium [22] ($3 each) at 10 hairs each. With this, she can build the lash to look really natural and match the makeup accordingly.

If you were wondering which girls need this, only a handful do. "Becca [Tilley] and JoJo [Fletcher] both always have lashes on," she noted. Note that this technique requires a steady hand and might not be best for everyone, in which case Moldavon recommends Ardell Babies [23] ($4) and Glad Lash Demi Whispy [24] ($5) for a similar result but in strip lashes.

Your brows should look like Emily and Haley Ferguson: twins — not two different girls.

The Tip: Moldavon is a brow expert and stresses that symmetrical brows frame the face. Brows should be "twins, not sisters," Moldavon said, shaped and tweezed and colored to look identical. The result? Eyes everyone loves — just like Lauren's.

"Everyone's obsessed with Lauren's brows," Moldavon said. "Every girl wants that lift and that perfect brow."

"I'm into something that looks natural," Moldavon said. Her favorite tool for this is Anastasia's Brow Wiz [25] ($21), but for a more budget version of this product, she recommends BH Cosmetics's Studio Pro HD Brow Pencil [26] ($7).

Moldavon stresses to draw your borders first on the top and bottom and fill it in as you go, spoolie-ing, which is one of the most important steps. "Most people underfill them . . . most people take a product and draw through the middle," she explained. "You have so much real estate there that you have to take advantage of it."

You'll light up the set with good highlighting.

The Tip: Highlighting is the Bachelor technique for looking fresh faced and new. "Glowy is the new normal in the world of makeup," Moldavon said. "Powder is out and highlighter, oils, and shimmer creams are in."

But do note: this technique is sensitive to lighting. "For a photo shoot with flash, it's not going to work," she said. "For a bride? It would be terrible."

Moldavon recommends a wet liquid highlighter like Iconic London [27] ($37). A few other options are Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Highlighter in Champagne Pop or Rose Gold [28] ($38 each) and Tarte's Strobe in its Pro Palette [29] ($45), which Moldavon recently used with Lauren on a shoot.

She likes it because it wears very well, evolving over time. "It was really pretty on her," she explained. "But it got prettier on her as the day went on. She got a little shinier and it turned into something else."

Contouring with care makes the Bachelors stare.

The Tip: Another trend Bachelor girls are fans of is contouring. Moldavon likes to contour naturally, avoiding seams and hard lines where the cheek is being "cut" or the nose looks like it has too many different colors.

"The goal is not to see the contour: it's for them to look like they were blessed with amazing bone structure," Moldavon said.

She gently contours the top of the forehead where the sun would naturally hit the face and then adds shape just under the cheekbone and jawline, if necessary. "The center of the face is always a bit lighter as to add dimension to the face," she added.

Moldavon suggests Ashunta Sheriff Perfect Blend Foundation [30] ($40), which has both a light and dark side to each stick.

"You don't have to search for highlight or lowlight," she explained. "It's a pretty good place to start." She also loves Tarte's Shape Tape Concealer [31] ($24) and Charlotte Tilbury's Filmstar Bronze & Glow Contour Palette [32] ($68), the latter of which because it's subtle and "doesn't leave a giant stripe on the face."

However, these products work best on certain skin types. "For Lauren, because she's probably the fairest of them all, I use the Charlotte Tilbury," she noted. "On Sarah . . . Tarte's Shape Tape in light medium."
