While you might be sad to see Summer go, we are fully embracing Autumn's arrival. Not only is it the start of the school year, but a new season is an opportunity to switch things up. Since you're a beauty girl, you know that the easiest way to revamp your look is hitting up the salon for a haircut — but when you're making a change, you need to do it right. That's why we asked Jon Reyman, founder and stylist of Spoke & Weal salons and Matt Fugate, stylist at Sally Hershberger Downtown, to spill on the chicest styles they're seeing for the upcoming season. Not only are they going to give you the lingo you need to get the coif you crave, you can take the celebrity snaps to your next hair appointment. Whoever said change was difficult?

The Mixie

Worried that a supershort style will look too aggressive? Kate Mara's mixie (re: midlength pixie) is for you — it's soft, touchable, and supremely feminine. But be sure your hair is a candidate for this cut. Fugate advised you should have fine to normal strands that are straight or slightly wavy and suggests asking your stylist to have it razored, not buzzed, to make it look softer.

"I use thinning scissors to cut this so you are left with a lot of leftover wisps," he explained. "For that soft effect, rake some cream through the style and hair spray your fingers to coif."

If you're a bold gal but want some leeway when styling your strands, ask your stylist for a long pixie like Michelle Williams's.

"It's more playful and textured, with an undercut," said Reyman. Wash-and-go personalities should avoid this look, as it does require maintenance and styling products.

That said, if you are used to tending to your mane but are looking for a switch, the long pixie is a great option. "This look is for a risk-taker, but it has more versatility and can be easily styled smooth, messy, or gritty," he said.

The Bob

If you're interested in trying a bob like Rachel McAdams's, know that this cut makes a serious statement. Be prepared for the attention it draws. Haircutting technique also matters when taking on the short crop.

"Make sure density is managed with this look," cautioned Reyman. "If your hair is too dense, the bob will look like a mushroom!"

He likes this cut blown out supersmooth and straight, but no matter how you style it, the bob is modern and cool. Plus, if you're getting over a breakup or starting any new phase in your life, there are few better ways to get a fresh beginning than chopping off all your hair!

While the length on this cut is similar to a lob, that's where the similarities end. The new shag is more edgy, textured, and effortlessly cool.

"It's all about attitude," explained Fugate. "You can style with your hands, or not style at all — embrace the haircut and let the layers fall wherever."

He notes that Taylor Swift's cut works on all hair types, but insisted that the denser your mane, the better. That way the stylist can chop and razor up your strands to suit your look.

"This hair works nicely with hats and will look killer with the bell-bottoms we've been seeing," added Reyman.

While you loved your lob, you found it to be way too much work. Besides waking up early to blow out your strands, who has the time to regularly visit a salon for trims? Rock Jessica Alba's softer, longer style instead.

"It's one of the most versatile haircuts you can have," said Reyman. "It works for everyone."

You don't need to add a bunch of layers to make this cut sophisticated — just ask your stylist to texturize your mane for body and movement. While Reyman noted that the grown-out lob looks great styled in a variety of ways, he loves adding beachy waves to this style.

"Use a combination of oil and hold products to blow dry," he suggested, "and style with a flat iron to add bend."

Long hair will never go out of style, but the way you have it cut makes a huge difference in how modern it appears. Instead of getting that "outdated Marcia Brady look," Fugate recommended asking your stylist for textured ends like Gigi Hadid's.

"You want ends that seamlessly vanish as opposed to being blunt," he said.

This ultra-low-maintenance cut is perfect for lazy gals of any hair type. Leave-in styling products and hydration sprays will keep your long locks healthy and glossy.

Choppy and Messy

No matter how long your hair is, you can give it a dose of edginess with some carefully sliced strands. "Embrace the razor!" declared Fugate. "This adds freedom to your hair, and it’s sexy as hell." Look to Chrissy Teigen or Kim Kardashian for inspiration for this style. To keep your look messy, try using a curling wand to create messy waves (keep the ends straight for an undone feel) and a lot of texturizing sprays for volume at the root.

If you can't part with your long strands but want to refresh your look, try a chic, layered style like Jennifer Lopez's. "The versatility of this cut is amazing," said Reyman. You can wear it curly, wavy, or straight; throw it into a braid; or even do the high-fashion hair tuck.

To mimic this style, your hair should be cut so it is light and has movement. "A good stylist will know where, when, and how to remove the right amount of weight so your hair looks full and accentuates your facial features," explained Reyman.

But don't think that this is a no-maintenance look. "It actually takes work to make hair look perfectly natural," he warned. "If you don't put a little elbow grease in, it will look sloppy or unfinished."

Break out a flat-iron to add cool-girl texture, or add some product and put it in a half-bun.

The Structured Soft Bob

Straight-haired girls: if you're wary of trying a traditional bob because you think it will look too severe on you, ask for a cut like Olivia Munn's. Asking your stylist for softness and structure will give the style movement, avoiding the dreaded helmet-hair look.

"Cropping [straight] texture will allow for more lift and movement, but the length and structure keep this cut as professional as you need," explained Reyman.

"It's a power cut, not a cower cut," he added.

If your hair is ultrafine, adding texturizing products — Reyman likes Aveda's Phomollient Styling Foam ($20) — is a must. They'll keep your look from falling flat.

The Curly A-Line Lob

Think you can't cut your naturally curly coif into a shorter style? Think again — and look at Selena Gomez's mane! You just have to be the master of texture management.

If you love (and know how to handle) your curls, visit the salon for a mid-length chop with longer front pieces. Reyman suggested you ask your stylist to control the length, so curls fall slightly below the shoulder in the front, but graze the shoulder in the back. "Fall is a nice time to go shorter for curly hair — most of the country is less humid," he said.

You will need some products to maintain this look. "Curl is about texture, which is managed by products," explained Reyman. "The best curly cut in the world is a big fuzzy mess without the right product."

He advised a light-hold spray (nothing that will make hair crunchy) for fine strands and a blend of oils and strong-hold products to keep coarse curly strands looking polished.
