Blonde Ambition: The Secret Behind This Hair Color

My friend here — we'll call her Debbie Harry for fun — has the kind of long, beautiful, blond hair that I daydream about having. It's soft, golden, kinda Shiloh Jolie-Pittesque, and it complements her porcelain skin so well. We went out the other night, and I offhandedly mentioned how I've been thinking of dyeing my hair blond. "I just don't want to spend a fortune at the salon," I said. "You're lucky to have naturally blond hair."

So then Debbie starts laughing, har har. As it turns out, she's not a natural blonde. You could have knocked me over with a feather. Then I had to get the name of her colorist. And then she blew my mind: She colors her hair at home with L'Oreal Excellence in 10 Lightest Ultra Blonde. (To create different tones, she's used levels 9 and 9½.) Her secret to keeping her hair soft and brass-free? She touches up only her roots each month, and she uses the deep conditioner that comes with Excellence all month long. Now that I know her secrets, it's only a matter of time before I join her in the secret society of bottle blondes.

When she says her friend used two different colors to create different tones, did she mix the two colors together? Or do you dye using one color and then once you're done, you dye again using the second color? I guess I'm confused how you use two different colors to create different tones with boxed dye.

Looks better than many celebrities out there -- who we all know spend a fortune to keep their locks blond.

What is her natural color!?

I think if y'all saw her hair in real life, you'd be amazed. Everyone's jaw dropped when they found out that it wasn't natural. It's gorgeous!

She has beautiful hair - I can see why you wanted it too! I like the idea of combining two different shades to get a more natural colour.

Wow, I would have been totally fooled too! I usually think died blonde hair looks way too fake, and actually not pretty at all. But this changed my mind! Very nice, I'll take note...

I want to be blonde and it actually looks semi-natural on me but I feel like I have so much more sex appeal as a brunette. Blonde just doesn't work for me, even though I hear about blonde bombshells and all that all the time.

It's not "hating" to say the color doesn't look natural. It's certainly very pretty. I know plenty of natural blondes, and some of them have very, very light hair. But this particular tone just doesn't look natural to me. Maybe it looks more natural in person?

I've never had the desire to go blonde, but this shade is pretty. My friend is a natural blonde like this.

As a natural blond myself (honey blond shade) I would have probably been fooled to. Natural blond colors come in a variety of shades. When I was a kid I naturally had platinum blond hair even though my lashes and brows are dark. It eventually turned to a honey shade but I still get streaks of that platinum specially through the front. When I was at my honey shade I use to get asked all the time if I dyed my hair but I didn't. I do now though. I have been a brunette for 6 years. I have considered going back to my natural color but I would have a professional do it because the box color scares me

I knew a girl in high school that's whole family had that hair color. The girl in my class is now 21, and she's never died her hair once. It's still that color, and she wears it long and proud. So, I agree. That color is naturally out there, but only the rare, lucky ones possess it.

No way! I have admired Debbie's hair for so long, I cannot believe she colors it, and herself. Now I'm even more impressed.

Stop hating. I think her blond hair looks very natural. I have seen that color in nature.

how does she use the conditioner all month long? it lasts me just one time. and i too am bottle blond and love it. though i use Garnier Belle Color and it fits my hair so much better, it's like silk and doesn't turn to brittle pieces of crap from usual salon jobs. that's why i stopped going, they always use 6 or 9 precent peroxid on my, when 3 is just enough, but they say my hair will look yellow. so fuck them, i do it myself now, touching up my roots every 2 weeks using half a bottle. i'm in control and my hair has never looked better. loreal actually isn't as good as garnier and is so much more expensive, plus if you have grey hair it doesn't cover it, especially if you use the new 10min colour thing. my mum did and all her grey hair was still there.

I have absolutely seen that color on natural blondes, it's just rare.

I was completely blonde as a baby. I would only wish it had stayed that way, except for my eyebrows and lashes, because it's easier to color light hair than dark. My little small bit of blonde still on my head is much easier to change the color of. I love your friend's hair color.

As another natural blonde, I second that there is nothing natural looking about her hair color. (although I have recently dyed my hair red.)

Haha, as a natural blonde I can tell you, from a mile away, that isn't a natural color. :D But when I went through a platinum blonde phase, L'Oreal Excellence worked really well and didn't make my hair brassy. Since I already had light hair, I didn't have to bleach my hair to reach that color. So, yes, the L'Oreal hair dyes are good. Now, I'm back to my natural color and I won't dye again until I start going gray. It's a such a hassle (and gets expensive) to dye hair.

Kudos to her. Be careful if your brunette locks (like mine) pull red, doing it at home could be a huge disaster!

Kuddos to your friend for having the nerve to color hair that long. Mine is just a bit longer than hers, performing a decent home coloring job is beyond my abilities! Good luck with the blond. Just remember that if your hair is currently dark you need to go red before you go blond or you'll end up green!!

Did you really think that was natural? Nobody has that color hair naturally.
