Botox backlash

Beauty Byte: Botox Backlash

It should come as no surprise that injecting a deadly poison into your skin can have dangerous side effects. And although Botox is largely considered safe, some people say it's a lot riskier than we'd thought.

Consumer advocacy group Public Citizen is asking the FDA to issue a black-box warning for Botox and Myobloc, another botulism-based injectable, after it determined that treatments with the toxins resulted in 180 complications and 16 deaths. This assertion has not been verified by the FDA, but that kind of news is never good to read.

Public Citizen is also pushing for a requirement that doctors provide their patients with pamphlets that outline the risks of the procedure. This news probably isn't enough to stop women from using this admittedly effective wrinkle eraser, but it'll certainly, uh, raise a few eyebrows. What do you think?

I think it's a good idea. That way, women would make more informed decisions. Truthfully, I feel sorry for women who undergo elective cosmetic procedures or surgeries. They do not accept their natural appearances. How sad. :(

Botox scares me. I wish women who use it for cosmetic purposes (instead of actual health reasons) would learn to accept themselves. I think women who take care of themselves but age naturally, with no surgeries or botox or injectables- they're some of the loveliest women. I think your face should have character, and not look frozen.

To each their own I guess...

Agreed, kaenai. You'd think it'd be common sense, but I guess wanting to look a bit younger outweighs that.

Seriously, how long did people think they could go around injecting botulism into their faces before something awful happened? :/

Botox is a crazy thing. Health Care providers are in the know about how Botox can go wrong . I remeber working for a major US health insurance company and we were given some info on Botox...carzy stuff!!! There is a reason Botox is only recommended for severe Migraine headaches.....the health insurance companies will not pay unless it is stated by a physician that it is CHRONIC MIGRAINE and patients are still required to sign a form...does that tell you anything?
