Could the End of Scent Be Near?

Are women wearing less perfume than they used to? That's the question pondered in an article in today's New York Times. There are nearly twice as many fragrances on the market today than there were six years ago, yet overall sales have dropped by $6 million in the past year alone.
So why are we buying less when we're faced with more options? There are a few reasons:

  • Our relationships have become less intimate because of our busier lifestyles, making it more difficult for people to give a fragrance that fits.
  • Some women cited instances where their mates disliked their fragrance, causing them to forgo wearing perfume altogether.
  • Some public venues, offices, and events have banned perfume outright out of consideration for others.

Since it's Valentines Day, this has me wondering whether your sweetie likes it when you wear perfume. Do you think he would be able to pick one out that you would like?

I wear perfume everyday and I collect it as well. The husband doesn't understand that perfume is not only the sent, but the packaging as well. I probably wouldn't buy as much if the bottles weren't so I don't have asignature scent, I just wear what I feel like that day, but more often that not, I choose fruity.

I think that perfume isn't going to go out so much as the way it's used will change - as people realize that 30 hour perfume isn't the way to go, they will switch to more natural, subtle materials.

I wear perfume everyday, my signature scent is princess by vera wang. I think maybe perfume is a little expensive, I always buy mine at the airport to save.

hey bella, i actually worked in a perfume store for a year (last year in fact) and i can tell you that people are buying more perfume than ever but the thing is that the cost of perfume has dropped significantly. so even though people are buying more companies aren't making as much money simply because of the selling price. celebrity fragrances in particular (most manufactured by elizabeth arden e.g. with love by hilary duff or the lancaster group e.g. j.lo's and sarah jessica parker's fragrances etc.) use synthetic ingredients as opposed to oils, which all the top fragrance houses such as chanel and annick goutal insist upon garnering the higher price tags. the synthetic ingredients are cheaper so naturally the fragrances are cheaper and also the synthetic ingredients aren't of the same standard as the oils i.e. they don't last as long, they smell better on dry skin than oily skin because natural oils and synthetics don't mix well and synthetic perfumes don't really develop like oil perfumes with their top, heart and base notes. synthetic fragrances smell the same at the beginning and end, they just fade away as opposed to "telling a story" :) i just thought should be taken into consideration before we write off the perfume industry for good xx

I love perfumes, but I try not to buy too many of them. I didn't have electricity for weeks after Katrina hit and about a third of my perfumes spoiled. And since we are in an active hurricane period, I'm hesitant to invest a ton of money in something that might go bad. Plus I have plenty of fragrances to wear as it is. LOL I just think that people don't have the disposable income to spend on frivolous stuff like they used to. Yes the celebrity fragrances are a little out of control, but at the end of the day if it stinks nobody will buy it.

i try to stick to the more classic fragrances.. burbery original and brit, and chanel chance (oh so good!).. for more casual times i have vicky's love spell and escada island paradise or something, very summery, reminds me of miami :) boyfriend doesnt like to wear cologne himself, his mom's allergic so he grew up fragrance-free and hasnt gotten into it in the years since.. also hes in the army so.. :)

Forgot to mention that he does notice all of my perfumes, but he'd rather take me with him to choose perfume than get the wrong thing. :)

Perfume used to be created like an art, and now it's all a commercial tooth ache of fruity florals... I'm on a never ending search for the right perfume.

Perhaps there are just too many perfumes out there and the consumer is taking a break. Seriously do we need another celebrity or designer fragrance?

I never wear perfume. I don't like most of them, so it's a hassle to go through so many to find something that doesnt hurt my head. My boyfriend is also super picky. He likes "Clean" smells. Does perfume go bad? I bought one like 2 years ago and it smells Totally different now. It's gross.

I love perfume! especially this one brand that I've had forever, that I'm just addicted to. But only in small doses. With perfume, I've found that less is always more.

My husband hates perfume, it gives him a headache. Normally in Europe I can wear it sometimes, but here in the US I think the air is just oversaturated with synthetic fragrances - everything just smells stronger, and I've become sensitive too. So I decided to order some essential oils-based perfume "replicas", a friend gave me the web addy - can't wait to try it!

I am a fragrance junkie, but I only keep a stash of my five or so favorites, and I typically ignore the bad, gimmicky fragrances that seem to be popping up on a daily basis. I agree that prices are ludicrous, and I would definitely buy and try more fragrances if I could buy a smaller size. The big bottles are only good, IMO, if you're buying your signature fragrance that you know you will use in entirety.

I wear perfume everyday :P It might just be because eprfume is so freakin' expensive! It's not something you can just go out and's like a new pair of shoes or a pruse. And to be honest, I would buy those over purfume anyday :P

I am a perfume ADDICT! Which is not to say you can smell me from 10 ft away - you can wear perfume without it 'wearing' you! I can't imagine a day without at least some perfume, it would be like walking around without a bra on, I would feel undressed. As long as my husband isn't in the room while I spray he loves it, he just can't take the inital blast! People are very huggy where I live and after someone gives me a hug they always tell me how good I smell (and sometimes pull me back in for a bigger sniff, which is too funny!). I could talk perfume all day, so I'm gonna zip it now! :D

"Some public venues, offices, and events have banned perfume outright out of consideration for others." I've never heard of this before! How do they enforce something like that? What if it's your hair products or lotion that is scented? Or your laundry detergent? Seems odd to me...just wear the stuff in moderation. I'm a Chanel Mademoiselle gal. I test a couple of fragrances every now and then looking for one I can rotate with the Chanel, but I end up just sticking with my standby. I'm so glad my fiance likes fragrance...his cologne smells soooo good.

I LOVE perfume and actually was thinking about going to Sephora today on my lunch and picking up a new one. My boyfriend loves cologne a whole lot too and always smells amazing, so I have to do the same! I get compliments that I smell good all the time, too. I love it.

Well, my opinion is that the prices of fragrances are SOOO HIGH! My Jason wears a lot of designer clothes, I love his Versace shirts and jeans. He was the one to get me into liking Versace. I have 2 of their fragrances and absolutely love them. Some advice to everyone, I started collecting a lot of fragrances lately and the tip is this......most usually come in 1.7oz or 3.4oz. Well, if you check anywhere, department stores or Sephora, as expensive as fragrances are, if you know what it smells like on you and you really like it.......always buy the large size!!!! If you compare the 2 sizes, it is WAYYYY cheaper to pay more and get the larger size. Hee, hee, you all might prolly already know that, just a tip :)

Some days I don't wear a fragrance but overall I do. My boyfriend loves the 4-5 different ones I swap around to.

i tend to wear the same 2 perfumes, one for winter and one for summer. i am allergic to a lot of them so once i found these two i really haven't switched (Burberry Brit for winter, Abercrombie 8 for summer in case you were wondering ;) ) my ex-ex bf actually picked out the Burberry Brit for me (with some help from my best friend!) so I have him to thank for that one I guess!! but yea so I don't contribute a lot to the perfume industry- i don't wear enough that I have to buy more than two bottles a year- sometimes not even that! legalbeagle- guys do love lovespell don't they! i have that too and that is what i splash on in the summer sometimes just for casual- like on the weekends or something.

I have a few friends who rant about people who wear perfumes. They have allergies and get a terrible headache when anyone smokes or wears perfumes around them. I've also noticed more and more perfume free offices. That keeps me from wearing perfumes more often.

me and my bf like perfume, but when I work at a hopsital they usually don't like you to wear it...:(

A lot of scents are too strong for me and make me sneeze. I used to wear a lot of different scents including several Chanels, but my chemistry changed. I like smelling just clean and barely scented from soap and/or whatever I've put in my bath or like vanilla. I wore vanilla when we first started dating and smelling vanilla anything reminds him of me. Lucky for me because vanilla doesn't make me sneeze! I do have one scent I wear for going out that smells fresh and sexy and doesn't make me ACHOO!!!
