Deborah Lippmann Talks Nail Trends

Deborah Lippmann, founder of Lippmann Collection, had a busy New York Fashion Week. After giving Mariah Carey not one but two manicures during Fashion Rocks (Mimi wore Fashion during the Stand Up To Cancer performance and then for Rhapsody in White for her solo), she did the nails at Rodarte, Zac Posen and Zegna (which, if you read my post on nail techs during FW, you know is no small feat). Still, she took a minute to talk to me backstage about a multitude of nail topics, the first being trends. To find out the fate of the French pedicure and whether you can stop asking for "squoval" nails

.

OK, here's your chance: What nail trends do you never want to see again?
Deborah Lippmann: Neon is done; it's a quick trend. As for pedicure trends, the French pedicure is done. Done! It’s so over. And also, no length on the toenails. They shouldn’t go over the toe — maybe even have a little bit of flesh showing. The chipped nail polish trend is over too.

What nail shape is in coming into style?
Deborah Lippmann: It’s going a little softer, more feminine, not square. Not oval, not squoval, somewhere between an oval and, if you have a little bit of a length, an almond shape. That’s what I do on all the fashion shoots, that’s what all the photographers want.

What's are the upcoming trends in nail color?
Deborah Lippmann: It’s matchy matchy. Matching nails on hands and feet are coming back. We’ll be seeing lavenders and lilacs with a little bit of twinkle. For Spring, sheer nail polish is not happening. You can still wear a neutral nail, like something flesh-toned. But for neutrals, it's not a twinkle, not a sparkle, not an iridescent.

To find out how to find your neutral, check back on Wednesday!

I got a french pedi ONCE. Between the expense, the lack of longevity (it chipped in a week) and the attention it brought my toes, I just wasn't into it. I do my own pedis, and they're a cute metallic red. On my fingernails (natural, finally, after about 6 years of fakes) I do my own "American manicure" (sort of like a french, but with a natural tip instead of white), because my natural nails are a little transparent, so if I leave them plain they look dirty. And as far as shape goes, I just follow the edge of the quick. Simple and natural.

Hmm.. I guess I should take the time to get another pedicure (the polish is chipping). lol I loooove flesh/neutral/nude tones. My nail polish box is filled with em. But, I went out on a limb a few weeks ago &bought two new colors (purple & lilac). I can't wait to use them!! (&of course to be in with the trend. :P)

French pedicures bother me, regardless of what's in or out. I'm not ready to let go of bright colours yet though...seasons seem to come and go too quickly. Right when I get into the swing of one season, the next one comes and I need to overhaul my wardrobe and makeup :\

What about the recent craze that is konad that is sweeping over most nail boards? I know nail art is tacky, but I don't see anything wrong with a few random touches on finger or big toe.

I don't have an opinion on French mani/pedis one way or the other, but I think people should wear what they want. It's just seems kind of ridiculous to stop wearing something because of what someone else decides to dictate is in or out or what season is supposed to be the only one to wear a certain color.

This lady doesn't know how to explain things,,''not oval, not square, not squoval, so what is it? her nails look scary to me in that picture,,like a witch! I like all colors of nail polish, from nude to bright colors to black. I like to get my manicure and pedicure french but a colombian lady does it, and is just perfect. she blends the colors perfect so the white is not to white, is more like a french/nude, and she does the line very thin, looks very clean, polished and natural. love it.

I always hated the french pedicure and manicure. I'm glad they're finally falling out of trend. As for the new nail shape, I need a picture. The description is hard to understand. It's between oval and square, but not a combination. So, what is it? Almond is oval shaped... ???

Interesting post. I look foward to hearing what else she has to say. Although, I will have to actually see the new nail shape since I am not crazy about the sound of it. I like contrasting french mani/pedi's (dark plum against medium plum, etc...) it looks fun and fresh and isn't the over the used regular french manicure. Also, I dislike having matchy-matchy nails. I do not care if it is "in" or not; Just not my style.

Ok, I always thought that the french mani and pedi were tres chic! Was I wrong? I never liked loud colors personally as a nail polish. Always neutral. That's why I only stick 2 French mani. So why is it so OUT? Cuz its old?

I love neon colors especially pink in the summer but it's not appropriate for the other seasons. I, for one, am glad to see that french pedicures are out. They creep me out. I've never been one for matching nails and toes, what is the fun in that. Perhaps I'll do a lighter shade on the fingers and a darker on the toe in the same color, that would be cute.

I love my kind of neon purple nail polish, although I admit that I won't wear it past August! I don't like the French pedi either, it's too strange.

whatever, i love my french mani and pedis! i was going to do neon pink for my fingernails but the directors of my dance team said they had to be french. bleh.

The French pedi always freaked me out. The mere idea of having your toenails purposely be painted to look longer is .... too.... um, Nosferatu for me.

I always wear the brightest colors I can on my toes. I just makes me feel happy and brighter! As for my hands, I rarely wear nail polish, it just chips to easily, but I always keep my nails filed nicely. I never like squoval or whatever I guess mine are a little more rounded than that. it seems sort of silly to me for file your nails into a certain shape for a trend.

i wore the french pedi in high school and i can't go back to it. i look at my friends toes now 6 years post high school and so badly want to tell them to stop. no more french pedis! my personal taste is if you want a natural look, just wear neutral polish.

Sorry for not following the "rules", but after noticing neon colors in Sally's beauty supply. I kind of feel like getting neon pink.
