Do You Think Facials Are Helpful?

A few years ago, I had a great facial. It was so great, in fact, that when I met my friend Trevor for lunch afterward, he said, "Wow, your skin's all... glowy." (Rule of thumb: If a guy notices your skin without being prompted, you know it's a good facial.)

Of course, since then, I've had some blah facials, too. It doesn't help that lots of dermatologists say that while facials can be relaxing, they don't offer any real benefits otherwise. What do you think? Do you think facials really help your complexion clear up, or is it just a relaxing treatment?

Never had one. But Back rubs now that would be bliss...

yes, I think they help but you must have one at least once month, one time only is not really going to do whole lot for your skin.

Estheticians do a lot more educating about actual skin care than derms ever do. They want to put every one on meds and call it a day. The Esthetician and the Derm are starting to finally work together. MediSpas and doctors offices have an esthetician on staff to help clients with an at home regime and to keep skin in its best possible condition. Ok, I admit, I am an esthetician but really getting facials every four weeks will do a wonder in anyones skin. I have seen it!

Yes! Facials are the best!!! Totally makes me forget my stress for the time it takes to have one. So worth it.

i had one once and loved it. i feel like my skin is pretty nice already - i just went to relax and enjoy being pampered (which i was!). it was worth it but i'd prefer to get a massage or body wrap next time.

i've been getting facials since i was 15 since i have really oily skin and blackhead problems... a great facial usually depends on the person performing it. i've experienced really relaxing facials and excruciating ones. :D

Does anyone have any experience with rosacea and facials? I have two red spots that I've had for 3 years and I'm thinking of getting them lasered. Has any of you done this, is it effective? I'm weary about getting facials because my skin is so sensitive, and the red after math might actually stay on my face..

I really don't know. I just had one facial my entire life but it did not change anything.

I think they are relaxing but they don't do much for me. Again, that's for me, everyone is different. When I had really bad skin, the laser one was helpful, as well as the extractions. It also depends where you go. Some places I've been scar you and make you break out and others do it just right. So, it depends on the person, their skin and the facialist (is that a word? LOL!)

I love the way my skin looks and feels after a facial. My makeup even looks better. My husband agrees and he usually doesn't comment on makeup. I don't care if it has long term benefits or not 'cuz they feel so good and relaxing!

I'm all for facials!

They probably are good for the skin, but the lady in the picture looks more like a mortician than a beautician!

i think it depends on the skin type, as well as what type of facial you have done. my mom has facials, and her skin glows. whereas when i got a facial, my skin looked great, and then went biserk and broke out!

I've gotten a few and maybe mine were all bad because I never had glowy skin and the spots on my face don't even seem to go away. I drank nothing but water for a month and that still didn't do anything. I will try some microdermabrasion. Maybe that's my next step.

I've only had extractions, and while it definitely improved the look of my nose (where all my blackheads are), my face was inflamed for the next two days, and I broke out a day after that. Still, I go back every 3 months. Which facials do you go to to get that 'glowy' look?

I just started getting them and I have found them to be helpful for my skin. I get the "glow" that others have talked about as well. I think it also helps that I use the products recommened by my esthetician and wear sunscreen every day and try to drink enough water.

I love them, but the effects only last a couple days in my experience. Constant vigilant skincare is my mantra!

sofi - high frequency is often used in plastic surgery offices and dermatologist's offices because it promotes healing. it's affective if used after extractions because it can also kill a lot of bacteria on the skin.

as an esthetician ... I will be perfectly honest and say that while they are good for surface skin issues and relaxation, to get actual results you should invest your time in money in a good dermatologist that can offer more advanced treatments that go below the surface of the skin (ie IPL, laser peels, thermage, etc)

When I got my one and only professional husband said all he could see were all my pores. I had gone after work, and the girl there didn't even bother to take off all my make-up. It's possible I just went to a bad place, but it was a chain spa place in the mall (of course they are gone now). Neutrogena's microderm abrasion pads work just as well at home and give you a month's worth.

Depends on the facial. Extractions are good for clearing pores, and I like the blue light therapy that kills of bacteria. Some of the other stuff isn't too much different from what you can do at home. I follow the Skin Type Solution religiously because I have never gotten so many compliments on my skin as I have on this regimen, and for my skin type, facials aren't recommended, but blue light is okay.

Facials are the best when you can get them consistently and often. I used to have one every week and my skin looked better than J Lo's!!!!! I love having the microdermabrasion/electric shock thingies to break up stuff under the surface of my skin.
