Eco-Friendly Product Packaging 2010-03-25 12:00:02

How Much Does Eco-Friendly Product Packaging Matter to You?

People like pretty packaging — no surprise there. But now, eco-conscious consumers want beauty products to be as green on the outside as they are inside.

Increasing numbers of manufacturers are offering products with minimal, recycled, and/or sustainable packaging. Pangea Organics' soap wrappers, for instance, are embedded with seeds for eventual planting. Gisele Bündchen's new skincare line includes packaging made from wind energy and is printed with soy-based inks. Green packaging might not always look as luxe, but it makes for a far better reduction on our carbon footprints in the long run.

Most of you have said that lousy packaging isn't a deal-breaker, but when it comes to the eco-friendliness of packaging, how much does that matter?

On the real - it really doesn't matter to me because I care much more about the quality of the actual product, it's effectiveness and how much $$.

I would try to buy products in "green" packaging, but it wouldn't be a complete deal-breaker. What makes my crazy is packaging like the original Olay Regenerist line. I haven't bought it in a while, so I don't know if it is still so excessive, but it used to be a plastic bottle, shrink-wrapped in plastic, in a plastic insert, sealed in a massive plastic box. That seemed like plastic overkill to me. Ok, I know I am a dope, but I got really excited when I saw that Sun Chips now come in a bag that is compostable.

IMO it's really important to have a conscientious mind. how can one control the environment and world around? with purchasing power. therefore it is really important to be aware of everything that's put into a product. that's the one great way to have a positive effect on your surroundings and environment. it's an act of responsibility.

I know I am awful but honestly I don't care about the product packaging. I am more concerned about the effectiveness of the product more than any thing.

Same as tls; it's a huge plus but I won't go out of my way or anything. Especially after the organic Physicians Formula blush reeeeally let me down. I loved the packaging but it smelled so bad!

I'm more likely to reach for an eco-friendly package, just because I know the chances will be higher that I'll get either a product that wasn't tested on animals, or a totally vegan product (bonus!).

Eh, really don't care. I'll buy the stuff that works for me and if it's eco-friendly that's just icing.
