Empire Beauty Schools Offers Discounted Keratin Treatments

Bella Bargain: $48 Keratin Straightening Treatments

If you've been thinking of treating your hair to a keratin treatment, here's an opportunity to do it on the cheap. The treatment, which de-frizzes and straightens hair, usually costs hundreds of dollars. But if you're willing to go to a beauty school, you can save about 80 percent. Through June, Empire Beauty Schools will be giving the treatments for $48.

If you have reservations about having a student work on your hair, here's the deal. Only advanced students are allowed to perform keratin treatments — so you won't get a nervous newbie on her first day — and all services are closely supervised by educators. There are 96 schools nationwide, the formula is formaldehyde-free (some aren't), and the price is right.

I like the offer given by Empire beauty schools. They are offering Keratin straightening treatments that are helpful for enhancing the quality of hair. These schools are also giving training classes to the students where the students learns several skills like hair-styling, make-up, hair coloring, nail polishing etc.

Ever since the Oregon OSHA and Canadian government studies found that even "formaldehyde-free" formulas have higher-than-legal levels of the stuff, I've been advising people to skip the service. If the ingredients are found to be safe, then have at it. Otherwise, it seems smart to form an attachment to your styling iron until further notice.

I think it's important for anyone considering getting this service done to consider the risks, especially for having it done by students who are more unqualified and still learning their craft. A woman writes about her experience in a thread that definitely changed my mind on the matter...

I'm going in next week, wish me luck!! BTW, it's only $48 for the treatment itself. You also have to buy the products that come with it, and they told me it's going to cost $20 extra for me for the treatment since I have long, thick hair.

how do you get an appointment? I can't find any information about services offered on their website.

I double-checked to see if Empire's formula is formaldehyde-free. It is indeed formaldehyde-free. I'm kinda freaky about this issue (because, duh, who wants to put a carcinogen on her head?) and I'd never suggest checking any treatment out if it did have formaldehyde. Kkirts, I haven't heard anything like that, but anything's possible. My best friend has had it done, as has our beauty correspondent Zelana (see here) and both were very happy with the results. No hair loss.

I've read some horror stories about this treatment which made me reconsider getting it done. Can't it sometimes make your hair fall out?
