Explanation of Felted Soap

I Feel You, Suds: The Rise of Felted Soap

Felted soap is one of those things that has seemingly always existed but is now suddenly everywhere, from a fancy Fiat Luxe round at Anthropologie to this "Soap Opera" felted soap on Etsy. But what, you may be asking, is felted soap, exactly, and why are we, the well-washed masses, all clambering for it now?

Basically, before there were loofahs and shower poufs, people used a plain old bar of soap sewn into a cute little boiled-wool covering. The wool is exfoliating and has antimicrobial properties, the soap lathers better, and you don't end up using as much soap per wash. With Etsy's increasing popularity, lots of tradition-based handicrafts and subcultures (steampunk, anyone?) are getting more mainstream attention, and it seems the collective unconscious—and mass market retailers—have picked up on this particular product. So that's the story on felted soap. Suds away!

Can you get them in other materials? I'm allergic to wool and that would break me out in hives before I could rinse!

I've seen these a LOT on etsy and some in stores too. I love the ones on etsy, they're always so cute!

This is cute! It seems a lot more hygenic than a loofah, too.

This seems really strange and it is my first time ever hearing about it. Sounds interesting though. I'm curious enough to want to try it. I've never seen it in a store though and am actually wondering if it really exist. Funny.
