Facial Radiance Important Factor in Attractiveness 2009-11-16 13:00:24

Could Radiant Skin Be the Best Indicator of Beauty?

You know how we're always hearing that face symmetry indicates how attractive a person is perceived? There's even software available so that you can determine your own facial evenness. (As if we really need that.) Now, researchers are hinting that it could actually be facial radiance that determines beauty. Researchers instructed 430 people to look at digital photos of idealized women, ages 10 to 70, with only just the skin tone and evenness being altered. "The highest scores went to the models with the most even skin tone. It seems to be more important than almost any other factor," Procter & Gamble's Dr. Paul Matts told the Daily Mail. In fact, it was noted that participants often averted their eyes when the model's skin was not smooth or balanced. (The horror!) To find out more, just keep reading. "Skin tone, especially in women, says a great deal about reproductive potential," explained evolutionary psychology expert Dr. Bernhard Fink to The Sunday Times, adding, "Humans are highly evolved to pick up on cues like that because at one time in our past it would have been crucial for reproductive success." What do you think? Is there some merit to these claims, or do you feel this research is a bit unbalanced itself?

maybe now we don't see the point of the tone of skin have to do with reproductive issues. but before i mean like in the beginning of the era of homo sapiens the tone of the skin are skill for survival, depend where you were, in the north area lighter skin was important because the lower lever of solar radiance can't entrance in darker tone, so lighter tone allow to entrance and help to assimilate vitamin c and help to fortified the bones. in the Southeast area have a lighter tone didn't help so the skin have to be darker to help to protect from the stronger solar radiance. but the glow of the skin is a indicate of health doesn't matter having darker or lighter tone of skin. even not we feel more attract to a glowing skin that a dull one, that is part of our genes to survivor. (sorry for my bad grammar, English isn't my first language)

My mother always told me how my great skin was my best beauty point when I was younger and she thought how utterly dreadful it was for ME when I started to get adult acne after college - and made it seem as if I completely went ugly. Now that I think about it, great skin does make someone a bit more attractive (may be 1-2 points higher on a 1-10 rating scale lol). But I really don't see how it has anything to do w/ reproductive issues as I know plenty of horrible skin people who has no problem finding mates.

I have glowy skin as long as i'm taking good care of myself. When i'm eating too much crap and drinking too much too, it really shows. My skin gets really dull.

I don't think it's "skin tone" per say, but good skin is an indicator of health. It's often a great indicator of someone's lifestyle/health/etc. Does it go hand in hand with reproductive health? Not always. But health in general? Yes.

I think skin is the leading indicator of beauty. Imagine a woman with a bad case of acne (with the deep, depressed scars) throughout her face. Trust me, her other attractive features will be overshadowed. Your first impression of her would be,"Yuck."

I'd be very happy if it were true because I have pretty even skin, I actually think it's my best feature... But I don't really believe it is a good indicator for attractiveness like the study sugests, the symmetry theory made more sense to me...
