Fragrance Review: Chanel Eau de Cologne

I recently set out to try one of the most popular Chanel Les Exclusifs Colognes called Eau de Cologne. I was interested in the scent because I heard that its crisp, fresh and clean aroma complements both men and women. Since the holidays are upon us, I'm always looking for great unisex gifts—most of my friends are coupled up now and bathroom real estate is precious.

The fragrance was created by Jacques Polge, and I was surprised by how much it reminded me of the yummy Italian limoncello dessert drink. The scent has notes of peppered rose, lemon, musk bergamot, neroli, vetiver and vanilla. (It's no wonder that it smells so delicious!)

The downside is that it's strong at first — so strong that more than one spray could bowl over anyone standing within ten feet of you. However, the upside is that although it hits you hard and fast, in time it fades into a charming floral scent.

Now that you know what an eau de cologne is, you can understand why the bottles are so big. In fact, it's one of the only scents that comes in a 400ml size ($300) as well as a 200ml size ($175). If you have a big budget and want to give a luxe gift, you might want to consider this one.

@Annie Tomlin That sounds good, too.  I'll have to try that one.  I also bought the Chanel #18, and Annie, I have to tell you, I only owned that until my niece came to visit and literally "swiped it"  for reasons very much like you described in the Sycomore. :)   She fell in love with the vetiver notes and the woodsy elements.  However,  the #18 had a definite "sweetness" to it, but then again, I have read that it, too, has been considered a unisex smell... At any rate, she looked so cute standing there, clutching that bottle of #18 that I first, laughed my head off and then "gave it up."   The Allure is nice, too.  But is definitely sweeter; it smells like Vanilla Chanel.  Honestly, it reminds me of what would happen if Chanel created a fragrance that smelled like vanilla, chocolate and caramel. :)  I'm single right now, but I'm thinking a boyfriend or husband would have "a ball" with that because it will make us smell like a classy "hot fudge sundae."  ;)   But then again, it's "fine" and calming at the same time.  Definitely worth a try.

@Marie2941781 Expensive ginger ale sounds good to me. There's an Alterna For Men shampoo/body wash that smells like that in my book, and I love it. (So does my man.) Anyway.   Sycomore isn't girly, either. I love it on both men and women. It's woodsy and crisp, with a lovely vetiver note. Little bit of pepper, too. It's light but not sparkling, if that makes any sense.

@Annie Tomlin    Hi Annie!   It actually took several weeks.  I kept going back and forth between that and the Bel Respiro (which I wasn't sure that I liked either, but that, too, grew on me.)  I suppose my issue with it was that it  wasn't .."girly" enough for me.  Then, somehow, I realized that it really was a "lemon/ginger" scent via Chanel and that made me love it, somehow.  It's a dry, elegant smell.  I realized the ginger element just recently when I caught a waft of the dry down and it made me think of very expensive ginger ale.  (LOL).  :)  So it made me think of lemon/ginger scents.   I didn't try the Sycomore yet.  What does that smell like?

@Marie2941781 How long did it take before you liked it? I have the opposite problem ("problem") with Chanel's Sycomore. I loved it right away, and I still do, but I rarely wear it -- don't want to use up my bottle too quickly.

Thank you for the review.  I, too, purchased this Chanel perfume.  Honestly, I wasn't sure that I liked it very much at first, but then, somehow,  it did grow on me.     It's elegant., very elegant.  But in the end, at least on me, it smells like very expensive lemon/ginger soap, with just a whisper of crushed petals of....something dry floral.   I actually love it now.  It just took time to learn to appreciate it.  I certainly wouldn't call it generic, it's definitely earned a place in this world as an exclusive Chanel.   It''s perfect for those ladies who don't like flowery smells.   As for the ambience, it makes you want to sit up straighter and make sure that you are ..."properly groomed". Like an embrace from an older Aunt who has seen and lived it all!  But is too classy to ever offer details... ;)   So if you like lemon/ginger scented anything, you can't go wrong with this one.  And the bottle is HUGE. Lastly, the staying power is really good, at least on me.  It's on until I wash it off the next day in the shower!

I really don't care for Chanel fragrances, with the exception of Chance. I find them to be TOO strong for my sounds like this one is also.
