While most of us complain about our summertime freckles or blemishes, one 19-year-old teen is fully embracing her body — more specifically, the hundreds of birthmarks that cover her skin.
Ciera Swaringen, who was born with congenital melanocytic nevus, a rare skin condition, has taken to social media to celebrate her unique appearance despite negative comments from bullies. "One day I remember being on the school bus and hearing a young boy laugh at me and call me a 'spotty dog,'" she said to HotSpot Media [1]. "That really knocked my confidence, I was only young and it made me feel different to the other kids, like something was wrong with me."
Over time, however, Ciera said she learned to ignore the hateful comments. Instead of focusing on the negative, she finds her strength and self-esteem from her mother. "I remember when I started school my mom told me that my birthmarks were angel kisses — and that really stuck with me," Ciera said.
Through her Instagram account, she proudly shows off her birthmarks in selfies and hashtags like "#MyOwnWCW," reminding ladies everywhere that being different is not bad at all. In fact, it's incredibly special.
Read on to see what else you should know about this inspiring young lady and how she's quickly following in the footsteps of other empowering women like Chrissy Teigen — who also isn't afraid to get real about her body [2].
