Hair Accessories For the Holidays

4 Nondorky Hair Accessories For the Holidays

The holidays are the perfect time for hair accessories, and Allure has all the tips on how to wear them in chic — not saccharine — fashion.

Maybe it's the glittery star perched on top of that tree, but there's something about the holidays that calls for festive hair accessories. Here are some of our favorite, most grown-up, ideas for the season.

Stack your bobby pins. Dress up your hair with silver and gold bobby pins — the more the merrier. Wearing multiple pins in different metal finishes is like wearing a stack of bangles — it adds shine without trying too hard. They're also more than just a pretty decoration — hairstylist Odile Gilbert suggests using them to pull short layers off your face, or to add structure to a messy bun. Oh, and if you lose a few, don't fret — this multimetal set at Ulta is under five dollars.

Balance sweet and tough. Give girlie hair accessories (like the Crystal Secret Garden headband from Dauphines of New York that I'm obsessed with, shown above) an edge by wearing jet-black eyeliner, says makeup artist Rachel Goodwin. Trace top and bottom lashes with a pencil and smudge it with a Q-tip. You want it to be dark, but not full-on goth.

Get a little messy. A sleek chignon or tight braid will make you look all buttoned up. Instead, keep buns and braids loose and a bit rough. Then, place a glittery bauble around the base of the chignon or above one ear to hold back shorter layers. I especially like combs when wearing a low knot, like the Galaxy Comb in gold from Jennifer Behr.

Tiaras? Not cool. Try a cuff instead. "Tiaras carry way to many references — both high and low — to be fresh and original," says hairstylist Orlando Pita. And you know what? Sometimes simple can make way more of an impact. One of this year's hottest looks is a small gold cuff slipped around the base of a low ponytail à la the Dries Van Noten show several seasons ago. Try a leather gold or bronze cuff from Goody's Doublewear collection or from Jennifer Behr's holiday offerings.
