Hair Rules Commercial For Curly Hair

Hair Rules: Too Cute or Too Much?

It's not hard to make a charming commercial when your stars are unstoppably cute, curly-haired little girls. This new Hair Rules spot features four girls dancing, hopping around, and generally having a fantastic time. I'm loving their sass and confidence, but some of their dance moves are a little more (unintentionally) sexualized than others. The girls probably picked up the hip-gyrating from music videos, and lots of kids innocently mimic grown-up behaviors, but there's still something a little off-putting about seeing children move provocatively. Do you see it that way or is this just a fun video?

Whoa. 4am is incredibly early for a little one. We used to leave for family visits around 7 and I thought that was rough. Puts things in perspective.

@Annie - I was a military kid and my dad had this absolute thing about having to start the drive to our new place or going to Grandma's at the crack of dawn. This was the only time my mom didn't fight trying to get us dressed. 4 AM is a craptastic to be a kid that is easily awakened but one that can't fall back asleep easily, especially in a moving car. No one cares if you're in jammies at 4 AM and you're on the highway!

Also when you consider that a lot of the dance moves were clearly modern/contemporary dance, my guess is these little girls aren't your average kids. They probably dance and if any of these girls are taking latin dance or jazz dance, hip movement is a huge part of it.

I think it's cute. I see it more as sassy than sexy and I danced like that when I was little. Cultural differences I think play a huge role in how you might perceive it.

They're all definitely cute, but the hip-wiggling is the thing that surprised me. Definitely unintentional, but then again, whoever edited this thought it was something that needed to be included. Maybe I'm getting old, who knows. I'm pretty sure I was taken out of the house in PJs a couple of times as a little girl. Probably not past six or seven, but to misquote Britney Spears, we were country. People didn't care.

i thought only one or two were doing moves that could be seen as sexualized. one of them (the smallest one) looked like she was putting a lot of effort into trying to seem like someone older throughout the whole commercial. but maybe i'm making stuff up...

i can see how you might see some sexualized moves in the video - but i do think it's unintentional and overall i think it's very cute and i good message.

@Sasseefrass You never went to the grocery store as a kid with nothing but a playshirt/jammies and undies on? (Geez, I must be really uncultured as my dad never bothered to get me dressed. My mom did, but my dad would just put me in the car with my jammies and my jammies were short!) It looks like they're all wearing jammies at a sleepover and dancing around in their jammies. I don't see anything wrong in that. To each their own interpretation!

They're imitating what they have seen on T.V. or even in their house. I think they're cute.

Ha! I loved that one little girl with light brown curls really got into the moves, while the blond one ran around at the end in a flying motion. I think this video is adorable, but can see where it could make some feel uncomfy for sure.

Well this childless wonder sees nothing wrong, no disrespect to the moms in here :-). Honestly I have seen worse, and I mean downright vulgar at one site (which I refuse to name) which people post links to. I can see how this can make some people uncomfortable in watching. Some of the moves was a little Beyonce-ish but a bit more "cutesy" than sexy in form. Was one of the little girls thrusting her crotch forward? I was mesmerized by the curls.

haha, that is way too cute! you'll be shocked when you hang out with kids how your adult mind can inform your perception of the mindless things they do - some kids (and adults) are naturally waist and hip movers or bum shakers, arm wavers, head nodders, foot shufflers - there's no point reading anything into it!

There's one other thing that bothers me about the video: The little blond girl is wearing a tank top and nothing on the bottom. With the other, you can talk yourself into believing they're just wearing dresses. With the tank top, there's no way around the idea that the kid is half undressed. In a more innocent age, that would be no biggie. Nowadays it's inviting unwanted attention. We don't let our 5 and 6 year olds come shopping with us wearing nothing but a shirt and undies; we shouldn't be putting them in commercials dressed that way. We can argue until we're blue in the face that she's covered more than she would be in a bathing suit, but the fact is that this way she looks half undressed.

I'm with you on feeling a little squeamish about it. I have two little girls and they don't dance like that at all. That said, my niece who has no exposure to music videos etc. has danced that way since she could. I think those kids were chosen in the audition precisely because of their dance style. That's where I take (mild) objection because those in charge could have chosen kids with a more innocent and free expression instead of choosing those that dance more like adults. FWIW, I also think that they've all had some dance training.

I think what they are doing are just basic dance moves that adults have sexualized. There are many things that are not sexual in nature that some adults sexualize.

They're cute, aren't they? Guess I asked because I wanted to know if it was just me. I think the girls are adorable, but some of the hip-shaking definitely seems more grown-up than the bouncing around and jumping. To me, anyway.
